On the evening of September 23, 2022, visitors to UCLA’s Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden will experience an unusual shift in atmosphere. International renowned cellist, will perform J.S. Bach’s six suites for solo cello inside a monolithic steel sculpture by , the T.E.U.C.L.A. (Torqued Ellipse).

I like to use by like a tarot deck. When I am contemplating my artistic beliefs or creative craft, I’ll flip through the book at random and read. Serendipitously, these days I find myself meditating on my own authentic mark making and fell in to this chapter.
My favourite artists are unabashed in the way they express personal gesture- creating their own iconic aesthetic by simply succumbing to their natural tempo and way of being. This is not to say that “knowing yourself” is so easy. We continue to change, to be inspired and to try on different hats. Yet, there are accents in our sense of self that remain constant and when an artist learns to speak openly with these, the work that comes through feels wonderfully honest.
I am always challenged by this. Success in an artwork for me is found in achieving a true and personal interpretation, a goal often thwarted by self judgement of what is appealing to others, “good” or influenced by current popularity.
Here is to rediscovering some honest scribbles and gesture that satisfies me first.

A final tip of the hat for this curatorial reminiscing on ‘Nature with Nurture’ for and which took place last November…
Ultimately my favourite part of being allowed “in” to curate artwork is the deeply personal and devoted perspectives I am exposed to by the artists I have the privilege of working with.
Art has a way of speaking clearly to what cannot fully be said otherwise. It allows you to recognize your presence in the world while simultaneously giving you the chance to adopt an ideation of it that has nothing to do with you. A stunning process that develops self-centred awareness, only to renounce it for a vaster selfless vision of humanity.
Occupying experience through the eyes of others is an exercise in empathy. It is a way to learn and ponder the unity of our existence together and Art is an unlimited language that allows us to do so.

More throwback Art nostalgia for the ‘Nature with Nurture’ show at featuring artists chosen by .
This piece was a curatorial delight to see come together.
An interactive installation placed in dark isolation from the rest of the show, it focused on ritual and introspective meditation.
Art boasts its power when a piece’s intentional presence creates space that can completely absorb the viewer before releasing them back in to the world with an altered state of mind.

Thinking back to installation days for the last show I had the pleasure of curating - ‘Nature with Nurture’ working with the incredible Latinx artists at .
3 months pregnant in this photo and now only a month away from delivery, the concept of this show resonates with me now more than ever.
It represented the energy that holds you to your life’s creative calling while granting your authentic self the opportunity to respond. This dialogue is supported by every generation that came before you, wholesomely responsible for influencing your unique identity. Poetically and inevitably, our own struggles and inspiration will propagate the future generation.
Today I remember that doubt lies in many corners and that life will move on with or without you. There is no point in restraint, no point in fearing exploration nor its outcomes. Follow every curiosity and revel in the humility that comes with not knowing. This is the path of ultimate bravery and true beauty somehow always waits for you at the end of it.

Egg Tempera on Canvas
Egg tempera was the weapon of choice in many of the medieval and renaissance paintings we revere today. More durable than oil paint and providing watercolour like qualities, the concoction is what it sounds like: egg yolk, pigment and water.
Though I have never used this medium myself, it already has the appeal of living in a methodological time capsule world. There is a thrill in using the same tools that belonged to ancient artists alive once more through modern hands. I love this kind of time travel, nostalgia for memories so far back they could never be yours. Like playing a piece by Bach on a harpsichord, communing with ghosts past as of if they could hear you.
Formally though, why use tempera other than to romanticize?
It is known to maintain a glowing quality that does not darken with age, resistant to light unlike oil paint. Additionally this glowing effect is supported by the fact that it paints with more transparency by holding less pigment. Notorious for drying very quickly, this creates a requirement for a series of layers or glazing in order to build up any depth of saturation which, if painted on a white background, becomes easily reflected by the sheen of the medium and bounces back with illuminating effect.
Historically, egg tempera has been used as far back as in Ancient Egypt in 1st century BC and everywhere in between until now.
Fascinated and intrigued… 🤓🤔🤩
