What do Archaeologists do in the off-season? ❄️

In Southern Ontario archaeology typically comes to a halt once we hit consistent freezing temperatures, or the first big snowfall. But that doesn't mean we're not still working!

We do an assortment of things like construction monitoring, report writing, running interviews and attending career fairs, equipment maintenance, washing, and our favorite - artifact analysis!

We've all been captivated by one particular find this winter. Any thoughts on the artifact on our last photo? 👀

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

Today, we honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities forever impacted by this legacy.

At PHC, we recognize that reconciliation is not a single day of remembrance—it is a responsibility we carry throughout the year. Our work alongside Indigenous communities reminds us daily of the importance of truth, respect, and healing.

To our Indigenous colleagues, partners, and communities: thank you for your strength, your stories, and your leadership. We walk beside you in this journey.

End of Spring Updates!

As always the start of the field season is a busy one filled with digging, screening, and field activities!

This year we've started Crew Bingo and we're excited to see which crews will manage to complete theirs before the new cards roll out next month - the more complicated the bingo the better the prizes 😉

FD T. Kagi's crew got a head start planning their next moves for a successful win - and we'll be sharing how different crews managed different wins in photos for everyone to see!

Another visit to J. Russell's crew shows some strong practise for straight walls, which will be critical to the Test Unit competition coming to PHC soon. Which crew will have the straightest walls? Cleanest unit floors? We also have a couple of wild card categories to share next month.

Stay tuned, stay safe, and stay hydrated field friends!

🔍 Ceramic Fragments Identified 🔍

We had a busy winter season cleaning and cataloguing artifacts and resetting for the busy Spring kick off. We had a packed lab with Field Directors, Report Writers, and Project Managers all working to get things ready for the Spring thaw - but we managed to have some fun too!

Our Lab Manager A. Telford made this ID of several ceramic fragments that looked suspiciously like they belonged together and followed the trail from a small amount of lettering we can barely make out.

Swipe for the reveal:

It's a children's plate! This one comes from the story of "Paul and Virginia" published in 1788. The novel was written by Jacques-Henri Bernardin Saint-Pierre, and in some way mirrors themes from Romeo and Juliet, with heavy undertones of Enlightenment philosophy thrown in for good measure.

This particular scene depicted on the plate is known as "Virginia at the Fountain"

Excited to show more artifact finds and identifications as they come in, as well as some goodies from the archives!

PHC Field Season 2025 Begins!🎉

It's been a week of test pitting, field walking, conference attending, and site visits from across the company on week one of the field season:

We've seen Trilliums and Trout Lilies in bloom, a sure sign that Spring has finally Sprung in Southern Ontario - as well as some less friendly reminders, such as ticks!

Stormy skies and clear fields have been confirmed by our Hamilton crews (we'll have some artifact photos from that fieldwork coming next week!)

We also have people checking out conferences and archaeology sites abroad, such as the PHC bottle (and PM Adam) making a visit to an Icelandic volcano Helgafall - also known as the Pompeii of the North!

Despite today's less than stellar weather the year is shaping up to be a busy one and we're excited to bring you all along for the ride!
