is leading the field of brain photobiomodulation (PBM) technology. We combine science with engineering ingenuity to develop devices that incorporate noninvasive methods of delivering the nurturing energy of red and near-infrared (NIR) light to the brain and the body. The Vielight story started in 1995, when Lew Lim and his colleagues at Silicon Valley invented intranasal photobiomodulation as a no

ninvasive method of delivering the therapeutic energy of red and NIR light into the human body. The research and development continued throughout the next decade before Vielight Inc. Officially incorporated in Canada in 2011, Vielight Inc. has since evolved into a formidable team of engineers, scientists and business professionals dedicated to making PBM technology accessible to as many people as possible. Vielight’s footprint currently covers North America, Europe, Australia and other markets. At the end of 2015, results from the initial pilot study conducted in collaboration with Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine warranted further investment and grants for bigger upcoming clinical trials approved by the FDA and Health Canada. Since then, the research and clinical trials designed to investigate our PBM devices for various applications are ongoing. Today Vielight produces a range of wearable PBM devices that employ our patented intranasal and transcranial PBM (tPBM) technologies. All Vielight PBM devices are classified as general wellness devices. In 2019 we announced the commencement of our pivotal-stage clinical trial where our Neuro RX Gamma tPBM device is investigated as a potential therapy for individuals with moderate to advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease. This important trial had to be postponed due to pandemic-related restrictions. We were able to restart the trial in 2021. Also, in 2021 we have announced the completion of our clinical trial where we investigated our Vielight RX Plus PBM device as a potential therapy for COVID-19. At the same time, researchers at the University of Utah have conducted an exploratory research where they studied the effects of our Neuro Gamma device on symptoms of traumatic brain injuries in retired pro-athletes from collision sports. A number of other studies investigating our devices are either ongoing or in the works. We always research new opportunities and expand our range of solutions. We collaborate with world-renowned research institutions in the field of photobiomodulation. Our goal is to combine the pioneering spirit with our passionate commitment to improving people’s lives by producing devices that help people.

At Vielight, we believe in a future where the brain’s natural potential to adapt and thrive is fully unlocked. Every day, athletes push human limits to achieve greatness. Yet, beneath that often lies a harsh reality: repetitive head impacts carry lifelong neurological risks, with no modern pharmacological cure.

This is the challenge driving our work with the University of Utah. We are pioneering PBM research with the Vielight Neuro designed to transform the landscape of cognitive recovery and deliver meaningful answers where they are needed most 💡

A groundbreaking, double-blind study published in the Journal of Neurotrauma tracked NCAA Division I football players over a 16-week season using advanced diffusion MRI.

The contrast was striking:
🏈 External Armor Limitations: Helmets protect the skull, but not the deep brain. The Sham (Control) Group showed a statistically significant increase in markers for deep-brain neuroinflammation - a "brain on fire."

🛡️ Internal Armor: Athletes using active Vielight itPBM (intranasal-transcranial photobiomodulation) showed profound neuroprotective stability with no visible damage markers, despite enduring the same repetitive impacts.

The implications extend far beyond sports. Recognizing this potential, the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a landmark $4.6 million grant to the University of Utah and NYU to launch a massive, 300-participant mTBI clinical trial.

This represents incredible recognition from the Pentagon regarding the power of light-based neurotechnology to reshape cognitive recovery and safeguard the minds of those who matter most.

There is a physics problem at the heart of the brain health industry that doesn't get discussed enough 🧠

The human skull absorbs up to 95% of light energy. This means transcranial-only photobiomodulation (tPBM), the technology behind most PBM devices on the market - is physically limited to the brain's outer layer, the cortex. The deeper, critical subcortical structures remain entirely out of range.

A few months ago, an independent Baycrest study (n=45) with Vielight tech quantified this gap by measuring glymphatic flow - and the results were significant enough that we felt they needed a proper demonstration, not just a paper.

So we got a real human skull.

In the video above, physicist John walks through exactly what happens to light energy as it travels through bone into the brain - and why one specific anatomical structure within the nose changes everything about how NIR light reaches deep brain tissue.

If you're interested in brain health, neuroscience, cognitive wellness, or rehabilitation - watch it, then come back with your hardest question.

💡 The most insightful question raised in the comments wins a Vielight MIP, worth $499.

If this raises questions for you, it will likely raise them for others in your network. We'd welcome the wider conversation.

We are proud to announce a landmark clinical collaboration with the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP) in Tokyo, Japan 💡

A newly published protocol in Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment marks a strategic shift for Vielight technology: moving beyond general wellness into the rigorous treatment of Cognitive Impairment Associated with Schizophrenia (CIS).

While modern medicine has made strides in managing the primary symptoms of schizophrenia, cognitive recovery remains a critical unmet need. Led by the NCNP’s Department of Preventive Intervention, this trial utilizes 40 Hz (Gamma) itPBM to target the neural "misfiring" at the heart of this condition.

Unlike standard transcranial-only devices (tPBM), the NCNP protocol leverages our proprietary Vielight intranasal-transcranial (itPBM) PBM system. This "top-down and bottom-up" approach is functionally necessary to address complex psychiatric disorders.

The intranasal applicator is the key to bypassing the thickest parts of the skull to reach the ventral brain and hippocampus - the deep-seated hubs for memory and emotion.

Circuit Synchronization: Schizophrenia often involves a breakdown in communication between the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus. By delivering 810nm light simultaneously from both gateways, we can synchronize this entire circuit at a consistent 40 Hz frequency.

As one of Japan’s six national centers, the NCNP is a global powerhouse in brain research. Their decision to pilot our itPBM technology - supported by the Japan Health Research Promotion Bureau - underscores the clinical credibility of our hardware in the evolving landscape of neuropsychiatry.

This study represents our commitment to "hard science" and the development of non-pharmacological tools that restore not just health, but the cognitive capacity for patients to thrive in daily life.

A landmark study published in Nature Scientific Reports proved that Vielight’s itPBM technology doesn’t just support the brain - it actively reorganizes neural oscillations in real-time.

Six years later, it remains the first and only high-level study to prove direct EEG neuromodulation using a commercially available PBM device.

Here is the breakdown of the "Network Tune-Up":

1️⃣ From Metabolic Support to Brain Tuning
We used to think Photobiomodulation (PBM) was just about mitochondria. The "New Evidence" shows that itPBM (intranasal-transcranial PBM) triggers direct electrophysiological changes, literally "re-tuning" your brainwaves.

2️⃣ Clearing the Fog
In a single 20-minute session, the study observed a statistically significant "up-shift" in frequency power:

📉 Lowering Delta & Theta: Suppressing the frequencies associated with lethargy and "brain fog."

📈 Boosting Alpha, Beta, & Gamma: Facilitating the states required for deep focus, memory, and high-level processing.

3️⃣ Efficiency by Design
Using Graph Theory, researchers proved that itPBM performs a "network tune-up." It increases Global Efficiency, meaning information travels faster and more reliably across neural hubs. It’s like upgrading your brain’s internal Wi-Fi from 3G to Fiber.

4️⃣ Future-Proofing
True longevity isn’t just about living longer; it’s about maintaining a high-performance state. By increasing network resilience and structural stability, we aren't just reacting to age - we’re priming the system for long-term cognitive health.

Ready to upgrade your cognition with the most scientifically-validated PBM wearable on the market?

We are incredibly proud to share that the University of Utah has been awarded a landmark $4.6M grant from the U.S. Department of War to establish a new standard of care for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Crucially, the University has selected Vielight (itPBM) technology as the exclusive intervention for this definitive n=300 clinical trial.

https://medicine.utah.edu/neurology/news/2025/12/shining-new-light-treatment-traumatic-brain-injury

This project follows Utah's powerful neuroprotection research with NCAA Division I football players and Vielight tech. In that breakthrough study, brain imaging data implied that our technology triggers significant neuroprotection and resilience effects - results that only Vielight itPBM tech has been able to achieve.

The Problem: For our military and first responders, TBI is an invisible but devastating reality. Chronic mTBI often leads to years of cognitive decline and a diminished quality of life. Current treatments are frequently limited to symptom management, leaving a massive gap in actual neurological recovery.

The Opportunity: This grant represents a relatively small investment in a technology that could yield massive results. By validating a non-invasive, drug-free solution, we aren't just looking for a treatment - we are looking for a scalable way to restore brain health, improve lives, and potentially save the healthcare system billions in long-term care costs.

Led by Dr. Elisabeth Wilde and Dr. Carrie Esopenko, this research will use advanced MRI to prove that Vielight technology can provide the protection and resilience our heroes deserve.

We are honored that our technology is the clinical foundation for this mission.
