🌿 One of the best parts of being a dietitian is testing recipes to find ones that are delicious, practical, affordable, and easy to make. This one is definitely worth sharing!

With basil overflowing in my garden, zucchini in season, and frozen peas a budget-friendly staple, I tried the vibrant Zucchini, Pea & Basil Soup from SIMPLE by Yotam Ottolenghi.

I made half of the recipe to serve 4 people:

* Sauté 1/2 head of garlic cloves
* Add 3 chopped zucchini, season with ground black pepper, add 750 mL stock, then boil for 7 minutes
* Add 2 cups frozen peas and 1 cup chopped fresh basil, then cook for 3 minutes
* Let cool, then blend until smooth
* Serve in bowls topped with 1 tablespoon crumbled feta and 1/4 tsp fresh lemon zest

We loved the fresh, flavourful soup that’s perfect for summer.

Have you made any new recipes lately? I’d love to hear them! Share your favourites in the comments. 🥣💚

✨ “Mindful eating is about awareness. When you eat mindfully, you slow down, pay attention to the food you’re eating, and savour every bite.”

One insight from a recent Dietitians of Canada professional training really stood out: education alone isn’t enough to create lasting change.

💭 Ask yourself: What’s getting in the way of eating the way you want to?

Mindful eating is a skill—not a quick fix. It takes practice, patience, and self-awareness to reconnect with your body’s hunger and fullness cues and navigate everyday eating with more confidence.

As a Registered Dietitian, I help clients move beyond knowing what to eat to building habits that actually last.

What helps you slow down and enjoy your meals? Share your thoughts below, or send me a message if you’d like support on your mindful eating journey.

Ultra-processed foods are one of the hottest topics in nutrition right now—and I’m excited to share that I explored this issue in a recent article published nationally in Postmedia. 📰

Here’s a quick takeaway: not all processed foods are the same. Freezing, canning, pasteurizing, and drying can help preserve nutrients, improve food safety, and reduce food waste. Foods like frozen vegetables, canned beans, and dried fruit can all be nourishing eating pattern.

One simple strategy? When buying packaged foods check the Nutrition Facts Table:
✔️ 5% Daily Value or less = a little
✔️ 15% Daily Value or more = a lot

Pay particular attention to high levels (15% DV or more) of sodium, sugars, and saturated fat when comparing products.

This is just one of the practical tips I cover in the full story. Read the complete article online through Postmedia, and if you’re looking for personalized, evidence-based nutrition support, reach out to me as a Registered Dietitian.

⚽️ Soccer is on everyone’s mind right now. Whether you’re an athlete, parent, or coach it’s important to know that optimal nutrition fuels performance. Having a nutrition plan can make a big difference in energy, recovery, and game-day performance in any sport.

I recently joined Dietitians of Canada’s Sports Nutrition Network for a webinar on fueling high-performance soccer athletes throughout the training and competition season.

⚽️ Pro Tips:

✔️ Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred fuel source. For games or training sessions lasting longer than 60 minutes, include quick-digesting carbs during activity. Think bananas 🍌, grapes 🍇, oranges 🍊, or sports drinks with carbs.

✔️ Protein supports recovery and muscle repair. Aim for a snack that includes both protein and carbohydrates within an hour after play.

✔️ Hydration matters every day. Even mild dehydration can impact performance. Keep a water bottle nearby and take regular sips during practices and games.

Whether you’re an elite athlete or a weekend player, strategic fueling can help you train, recover, and perform at your best.

⚽️ What’s your go-to game-day fueling strategy?

If you’d like help creating a personalized nutrition plan for sport, send me a DM or check the link in my bio. Many extended health benefit plans cover Registered Dietitian services. * ⚽

🎶 What a fun night out on Saturday seeing Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman on stage together. The stadium was packed, and it felt like everyone was singing along to songs they first heard in their youth. There’s something pretty special about music that can transport you back decades in just a few notes.

We’re still humming These Eyes a few days after a concert! 🎶

The Guess Who’s Takin’ It Back tour was a wonderful trip down memory lane—great music, lots of energy, and plenty of moments where the whole crowd joined in.

Many thanks to of Stohn Hay Cafazzo Heim Finlay LLP for including us in such a memorable evening.

If you have a chance to catch the tour, I’d recommend it. 🎸✨

Cycling through Puglia with family this May was such a memorable way to experience southern Italy. It felt slow enough to really taste our way through the region. From Monopoli to Otranto, we cycled on quiet roads through olive groves, coastal towns, and beautiful countryside while enjoying incredible local food along the way.

As a dietitian, I especially appreciated the importance of food and hydration planning in the warm climate. We looked for local meals, tasty snack breaks, seafood, regional veggies, pasta and water to keep us going.

The countryside masserias were also a highlight: peaceful, scenic, and the perfect place to unwind after a day of cycling.

Puglia has a rugged charm, warm hospitality, and a slower pace that makes it a wonderful region to explore by bike. See highlights in the pictures below. Buon appetito indeed.
