Is your association collecting data… or actually using it?

Insights from our 2026 Benchmarking Diagnostic show that while many associations are investing in technology, the real work of using those tools strategically is still underway.

A staggering 76% of associations have undertaken a significant digital transformation within the last two years, including 41% who launched initiatives in just the past 12 months.

But new technology alone doesn’t guarantee better outcomes.

Only 3% of associations fully segment their communications by audience. Despite having more member data than ever before, 86% use segmentation only intermittently, and 11% still send the exact same message to every member regardless of their needs.

The opportunity is clear: associations that move beyond simply collecting data toward actually activating it will have a significant advantage.

Insights from our 2026 Benchmarking Diagnostic suggest many associations may be operating inside an echo chamber.

Nearly half (45%) of associations do not conduct any formal research with non-members or future members.

Meanwhile, many organizations are collecting feedback from current members too slowly to keep up with a rapidly changing environment.

67% of associations conduct formal member surveys only every 2–3 years or less frequently, which doesn’t cut it in today’s pace of change.

A significant number of respondents to our 2026 Benchmarking Diagnostic cited member demographics and pricing concerns as drivers of membership changes. This indicates that in 2026, associations need to find a way to prove value to a diverse and new group of members.

And nearly half of associations have not taken a detailed review of their pricing and packaging, and including 22% who have never undertaken a review.
