The medicine is the easy part. 🩺

When I asked my NP student what stood out to her most about her pediatric rotation, she didn’t mention pathophysiology, diagnostic complexity or dosing. She mentioned the heavy emotional lifting.

Pediatrics is family-centered care in its most raw form. The clinical expertise gets you in the room, but navigating complex family dynamics, building trust with worried parents, and protecting adolescent confidentiality—that is the true art of the practice.

Let’s do some clinical reasoning! 🧠

A 3-year-old boy comes into the clinic with a sudden limp and complains of hip pain. He refuses to bear full weight but is otherwise playful. Vitals are stable, afebrile.

What red flags are you screening for, and what’s your first imaging/lab order?

Grateful heart today. ❤️ I had the absolute honor of presenting yesterday to the incredible Nurse Practitioners attending the NPAO Pediatric Virtual Symposium.

Thank you to everyone who tuned in, engaged with us, and shared your time.

I left feeling so incredibly inspired by my fellow speakers. Hearing about the profound expertise, skill, and compassion NPs are bringing to pediatric patients in every imaginable setting—from community clinics to acute care—was a powerful reminder of who we are.

This symposium highlighted something crucial: the importance of receiving education from NPs, for NPs.

We must have this conversation. While multi-disciplinary learning is wonderful and necessary, continuing to rely on education primarily given by MDs works against building our profession. It implicitly reinforces a traditional hierarchy that views NPs as assistants rather than the leaders, innovators, and clinical experts that we are in our fields.

When we learn from each other, we validate our unique perspective, our autonomous practice, and our worth. Let’s continue to lift our own voices and own our expertise. 🩺✨

Thank you again, , for bringing us together.

True leadership in healthcare isn’t defined by a title, full practice authority, or a faculty position—it is chosen every single day through our behaviors. 🩺✨
Whether you are a seasoned Nurse Practitioner running your own clinic, or an NP student navigating the stress of clinical rotations, these four pillars are essential to our professional practice:

👂 1. Be the Last to Speak: As NPs, we listen to our patients first to understand the whole diagnosis. As leaders, we listen to our teams first to foster better solutions.

🤝 2. Accept Accountability: We own our clinical decisions and our professional actions. Taking responsibility is how we maintain trust.

💪 3. Help Others: Whether you are precepting a student, mentoring a new graduate, or supporting a colleague, we lift others up.

💙 4. Accept Help Yourself: We cannot pour from an empty cup. Recognize your needs, seek second opinions, and ask for support when you feel burnout approaching. True strength is vulnerability.

Wherever you are in your NP journey, choose to lead.

How are you practicing leadership in your clinic or school today? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Primary Care is a Team Sport, Not a Hierarchy

The recent messaging from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) regarding the role of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) is disappointing. Framing NPs as “substitutes” who “blur the clarity” of care is not only inaccurate—it’s a step backward for Canadian healthcare.

Here is the reality:

• We are NOT substitutes. NPs are autonomous, highly educated primary care providers with a distinct, nursing-led model of care. We don’t “replace” physicians; we provide an essential, independent pillar of the healthcare system.

• The evidence is clear. Decades of peer-reviewed research show that NP-led care results in equal or better patient outcomes in chronic disease management, lower ER re-admission rates, and higher patient satisfaction scores.

• Protectionism hurts patients. Pitting professions against each other to “protect the integrity of a discipline” does nothing for the millions of Canadians without a primary care provider.
Collaboration requires mutual respect, not a hierarchy. When the CFPC suggests that NP autonomy “fragments care,” they ignore the evidence and the lived experience of patients who thrive under NP care.

We are colleagues, not competitors. It’s time to stop the turf wars and start focusing on the only thing that matters: access to high-quality care for every Canadian.

Federal Canada Health Act Directive Marks Turning Point for Nurse Practitioners Across Canada. NPAC calls on provinces and territories to build bold, flexible NP funding models as April 2027 compliance deadline approaches.

A major step forward for nurse practitioners in Canada. As of April 1, 2026, the federal Canada Health Act Services Policy confirms that medically necessary physician-equivalent services provided by regulated professionals, including nurse practitioners, are to be publicly insured.

This is an important turning point for patients, access, and the future of NP practice in Canada. The next step is ensuring provinces and territories fully implement this through appropriate funding and integration.
