This is so amazing. Such an important work.

This week a group of Mi'kmaw quillworkers and staff headed off to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. They will be developing treatment plans to stabilize the quill and birchbark objects for the travel home to Mi'kma'ki in a few years.

This is the first of two trips to DC this year for the quillworkers. Groups of beaders and basketmakers are following later this spring as part of the project. We hear it has been a great week and are looking forward to hearing the details!

Wela'liek to the Department of Canadian Heritage, , Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline, and the Primates World Relief and Development Fund ( ) for their support of the project.

Mi’kmaw History Month Day 02.

Did you know there is a difference between Mi’kmaw and Mi’kmaq

Mi’kmaw (mee-gah-maw) is the singular form of Mi’kmaq. It is an adjective that proceeds a noun.

Example:
This is a Mi’kmaw Dance. My Mi’kmaw husband. This is a Mi’kmaw gathering. Mi’kmaw Teacher.

Mi’kmaq (mee-gah-mah) is the plural. It can not be used as an adjective. It refers to the entire group of people.

Example:
The Mi’kmaq live here. Mi’kmaq attend this school. The Mi’kmaq have been invited.

Micmac is the mispronouncation of Mi’kmaq.
