Many of us learn that worth equals productivity. Rest feels indulgent. Asking for help feels weak. Interdependence feels immature. Emotions feel unprofessional. Burnout feels like proof of value.

This isn't by accident.

Oppressive systems like colonialism aren't ancient history. They are the scaffolding of our culture, and they hurt us all.

My latest post is up on my website. To keep reading, look below.

No one is ready to hear this, but...

If you’re not actively dismantling oppressive systems, you’re helping maintain them.

Good intentions don’t change outcomes.

Impact does.

👉 Apathy benefits the status quo.

👉 Silence is participation.

👉 Comfort is compliance.

And before anyone gets defensive — this isn’t about guilt or shame. It’s about responsibility.

For people with privilege, like me, our responsibility is even greater.

Privilege is defined as "a special, often unearned, advantage, immunity, or benefit granted to specific individuals or groups, typically based on social identity factors like race, gender, or class. It acts as an invisible, systemic "wind at one's back", providing greater access to resources and opportunities while often disadvantaging others."

Every single one of us has access to power: our voices, our money, our platforms, our choices.

The big question is - Are the choices we make with our power building a better world, or maintaining an oppressive one?

If this made you uncomfortable, sit with that.

That’s where change starts.

So let me ask you this... what is ONE thing you can do this week to start building a better world?

👉 Follow for dismantling oppressive systems + building a better world.

Looking back on Our Children Our Way 2025, I’m reminded how much impact thoughtful communication can have in supporting Indigenous children, families, and communities.

During my presentation, I shared practical strategies for creating communications that are clear, culturally grounded, and community‑centred. The goal was simple: give people tools they can actually use in their day‑to‑day work.

If you missed the session — or want to revisit the ideas — I’ve put together a blog recap with free resources from the session, including templates and guides to support your own projects.

Thank you again to the OCOW community for such an inspiring few days — the work we do together truly matters.

Ever wonder what you, as a settler, can do to be an Ally?

To actively work towards decolonization?

I have put together a resource, just for you, of local Saanich Peninsula based Indigenous organizations & individuals that are fundraising right now.

Regardless of where you live, I encourage you to make monthly recurring donations to Indigenous-led initiatives in your area.

Reconciliation is our collective responsibility, and this is one small, concrete way to begin.

Unpopular ways I run my business that build a better world.

✅ We only hire from marginalized communities.
✅ We’re fully remote.
✅ We offer unlimited time off and mental health days.
✅ We prioritize people over profits.
✅ We donate weekly without seeking tax benefits.
✅ We use non-violent communication.
✅ We’re trauma-informed and accountable.
✅ We mentor, promote, and pay living wages.

Most companies call this “too soft.”

I call it sustainable.

🚨Burnout isn’t a badge of honor.
🚨 Extraction isn’t leadership.
🚨 Hierarchy isn’t inevitable.

You can build a business that heals instead of harms.

This is what the future of leadership looks like.

👉 Follow if you believe work should support life — not consume it.

At Remarkable Communications, we’re committed to sustainability, and we use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) as a guiding framework.

These goals serve as a universal call to action for businesses, individuals, and governments alike, urging us all to contribute to a better world. Each goal carries its own significance, and if you’re looking to run a more sustainable business or lead a more eco-friendly life, I highly encourage you to dive deeper into them!

In my latest blog post, I share how we address three of the 17 UN SDGs at Remarkable: Goal 1 (No Poverty), Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Check it out here: https://www.laurelannestark.com/latest-news/small-actions-big-impact-how-i-embrace-sustainability-in-business to learn more about our approach!

I'm eager to hear which UN SDGs you’re focusing on in your own business. Let’s learn from each other and share ideas—drop your thoughts in the comments below!

Remarkable Communications gives monthly to organizations aligned with our mission to uplift and amplify the accomplishments, voices and culture of the people we serve.
⚽️ This year we zoned in on giving to youth in sports and activities that promote a healthy lifestyle! ⚽️

If you don't already know, I'm so happy to advise that: Monthly donations provide organizations with a more predictable income stream for better budgeting and planning. Who doesn't love budgeting!?

Here is a list of community fundraisers on the Saanich Peninsula that can guide us all toward stronger Indigenous allyship and brighter future together. https://remarkablecommunications.com/remarkable-communications-launches-donation-resource-page-for-settlers/

“Real Canadians aren’t racist” is something I hear a lot. But I’ve been thinking about how that belief can make people blind to the real harm Indigenous communities still face in Canada — from threats and harassment to systemic inequities rooted in colonialism.

In this post, I explore why silence isn’t neutral, why acknowledging ongoing racism matters, and what it looks like to stand with Indigenous voices in meaningful ways.

I feel like I'm always saying how grateful I am, but I really am!!
This time, it's for getting to work for visionary(!!!) Indigenous leaders who work so hard to amplify and preserve culture, engage their communities and keep people safe.

My company recently created some videos for the W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) First Nation that they use to share important updates and initiatives with their community members.

🧡 This is one of my favourite videos of Chief Don Tom's sharing a message with W̱JOȽEȽP youth 🧡
