An inside look at the most automated part of our manufacturing process. The hopper filled with wood chips provides the heat and the flowering water of the creek nearby provides the electricity for this hands free wood kiln built in house.
To be fully honest the power plant is not entirely maintenance free, and the hopper full of wood chips is a lot of work to fill, and loading the kiln and unloading the kiln still takes time, but once things are set up and running the heat and exhaust of wet air from the wood drying is completely free of human hands. Overall it’s a wonderful tool, I would build another if drying lumber payed better. Small scale like I am there isn’t much money in kiln drying, but I use up wood waste, which I think is valuable for environmental reasons.

How to locate run out in a sawn blank or milled piece of wood.

Find a split or check inspect the relative split line to the cut line of the spine or edge of your billet. These lines should be parallel. Within reason. Even starting from a split blank it is hard to make the lines perfectly parallel unless the tree itself is very cooperative. For makers it’s the glue edge that we are trying to minimize run out when book matching. The reflection of light on the finish can show a top that contained run out. Not a big deal, but noticeable to a trained eye.

If you want more information on runout and what it is or need another explanation just add the comment runout to this video.
Thanks!

Happy New Year! Over the holidays we took a fair bit of snow. After spending a whole bunch of time shovelling and plowing my way around the yard I tackled one of the remainder logs from last year. This extremely large spruce will be headed for guitar tops. Due to its sheer diameter I opted to whittle it down into manageable bits with chainsaw. After test splitting I found plenty of twist on the outside and very little inside so the solution in this case is to knock off the outer 4” of wood and focus inside where it’s straighter. In the second photo we can see some blanks starting to take shape and later this week it’s over to the bandsaw for some slicing.
