What Does It Really Mean to Be an Owner?
A business often starts with a spark —
A skill. A struggle. A vision. A necessity.
But after you’ve built it… what does ownership really mean?
🧭 Is it just about control and shares?
💼 Or is it also about how you show up — the values, identity, and culture you create?
This week, I reflected on something powerful from a podcast interview with Barbara Dartt. She said:
“We put people on the court and expect them to play together – and they don’t even know the rules, they don’t know what the ball is, and they are not sure how to score.”
She was speaking about the next generation of family business owners.
But I believe it’s just as true for the first generation too.
Most founders didn’t get a manual.
They built the business through grit, instinct, and a whole lot of figuring-it-out.
They became owners by doing — not by being taught.
And now, many find themselves wondering:
❓ What am I actually handing over?
❓ Who am I without the business?
That’s not hesitation. That’s a very human question of identity.
At Meliora, I work with Family Business Owners who are wrestling with exactly this:
💭 What does ownership mean to me — and what kind of legacy do I want to leave?
Not just at the legal level.
At the emotional level.
The leadership level.
The personal level.
Because you’re not just an owner.
You’re the author of a legacy.
🖊️ If you had the pen, what would you include in your ownership story?
If you’re ready to explore this quietly powerful question, message me directly. I’d love to hear your story.
