Day one, Jimmy said it straight: “I’ll support you, but I’m not doing any work.”

He was working full-time in marketing in Singapore and he cherished his work life balance. Proud Zebra was my thing, not his.

Then we moved to Canada and his job search stalled. I was drowning alone. He agreed to help… sales, marketing, logistics only. No design, no finance, no production.

Without Jimmy, Proud Zebra would not still be here and we wouldn’t be at pride markets. That’s the truth!

December 2021. Four suitcases between us, 23 kilos each. Everything we owned.

Seattle to the border by bus. Then off the bus and up the slope in the dark. Jimmy’s first time in Canada was dragging luggage through two sets of customs at midnight.

25+ hours of travel later, my high school friend picked us up in a car park with the heat running.

No apartment. No jobs. A cargo container somewhere on the Pacific with the rest of our lives in it.

Pride season is almost here, and we’re so excited to be back on the road! 💖

After taking a step back last year and only joining 2 festivals, we’re thrilled to be returning to 12 Pride events across B.C. in 2026. From the Okanagan to the Island to the Lower Mainland, we can’t wait to meet so many of you in person and celebrate our community.

Whether you’ve shopped with us before or are just discovering Proud Zebra for the first time, come say hi and let’s celebrate Pride together 🦓🌈

The delivery guy told us he’d never seen anyone pack a shipping cube that tightly.

8x8x10ft cargo cube. $4,000. I measured every single box and packed it like Tetris because of my background in architecture and couldn’t stop modelling things at the time.

Clothes, Jimmy’s Legos, kitchen stuff from my parents, and a few hundred enamel pins for a business we barely knew how to run.

Leaving my 4-year-old nephew, Liam, was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

Our second date. 6 drinks each.

We talked about the future for 6 hours straight — where we saw ourselves, whether we’d miss SG. A bit too deep for a second date now that I think about it LOL.

Gave ourselves 5 years. Took us 4.

The decision was made that night. Everything else forward was just ex*****on.

Two gaybies, 6 drinks in, a red thread of fate we didn’t see coming.

Born in Singapore. Left at 10. Came back at 20 with an accent.

Everyone laughed at me. I didn’t speak Singlish. I barely spoke Chinese. Outcasted for the way I talked… in the country I was born in.

Took me 4-5 years to feel like I fit. Then I moved back to Canada at 29 and felt like an outsider all over again.

Maybe that’s a big part of why Proud Zebra exists the way it does.

Hands shaking so bad I couldn’t play Mobile Legends properly in the back seat.

Six dates in. Singapore, 2017. I’d spent that afternoon in Photoshop designing a Toy Story card with our selfies from all 6 dates inside. Drove to a print shop because I didn’t own a printer.

That night at Bishan Park, I pulled the card out from behind the passenger seat and asked him to be my boyfriend.

Nine years later we run an LGBTQ+ brand out of our home in BC.

I ghosted him because I thought he wasn’t interested.

Turns out he was — he just showed it by planning the date instead of texting me back. Acts of service vs. words of affirmation. Two opposite love languages in a brand new relationship.

Me: “Why can’t you just hug me for 5 minutes?”
Jimmy: “Why can’t you plan some dates?”

Nine years later, we still bump into each other when we walk. He still plans everything.

I was in a hotel room in Vietnam for work, at 2am, drinking liquor while building a presentation due in 5 hours. My senior was right beside me doing the same thing.

Master In Architecture on a scholarship in Singapore. Weekends were for recovery. I was literally having nightmares about work.

So I paid off my remaining bond - money I didn’t really have - and walked away. Used what was left to start Proud Zebra out of my parents’ apartment.

No regrets. Not one.

A year of silence. Here’s why we’re back.

Took a year off for family stuff. Now we’re back, and this summer we’ll be at pride markets across BC from June through August.

The next few posts are the story of how we got here: how Jimmy and I met, why we moved countries, what nearly broke us. And why we make pins for identities most brands skip - aroace, demiboy, demigirl, and every stripe in the rainbow.
