It is extremely challenging to effectively rate 67 strings tested over a period of 2+ years. The main challenges are:

Accounting for different racquets used.

Accounting for how your game changes over time.

Attempting to remember nuances in playability that may have been forgotten over time.

Dealing with varying testing conditions, like weather, altitude and opponent.

To overcome these challenges, I felt it best to simplify the rating system using scores out of 3 rather than out of 10. Scores with a base 10 require better consistency and nuance. Using our subjective experience, can we truly precisely, and consistently, judge a racquet's control, differentiating a 6/10 control racquet from a 7/10 control racquet? Due to the inherent and incredible adaptability of the human body, I think that it’s unlikely ANYONE could do so with any level of repeatability.

To simply the scoring system for the puny human psyche, I have elected to rate most things out of 3, as I think we can generally distinguish performance as “above average,” “around average,” and “below average.”

Further, all racquets are rated in completely stock form with perofrmance averaged over several different string setups tried at different tensions.

Penn/Head has openned a new tennis ball factory in the Philippines, which will be the biggest tennis ball plant in the world. Better still, they own the rubber farm next door. To improve quality on the new Marathon+, Penn has started paying their factory workers based on quality not quantity. They also changed the felt from a "needle felt" process to a "woven felt process." Woven felt plays softer and more like a premium ball whereas needle felt is more durable. Simon and I agree than the Marathon+ is better.

The Mizuno Neo Ace is probably my favourite tennis shoe of the moment. Step-in comfort and speed aren't quite as as strong as the Exceed Tour 7 but I enjoy the superior stability and more generous cushioning. The lock-down in the mid-foot is top tier and the grip levels are perfect for my slidey preference. I would prefer a slightly more squared off toe box in future versions and I do find these to be slightly pointy.

Head's Biggest Failure: Not Having a Proper Pure Drive Competitor. Head knows this and has tried to bump up the power on the Extreme MP. It doesn't quite match the all-around playability of the Pure Drive or the EZONE 100 due to inferior comfort and directional control. To be fair, matching the PD and EZ100 is a tall task as major brands like Wilson and Tecnifibre also lack in this area.

Replacing your grommets is the most underrated way to keep your tennis racquet playing its best. This will help protect your racquet from the ground and help with stringing.
