Things that you think are positive for your baby but really aren't: later bedtime.

It might be tempting to spend extra quality time with your baby at bedtime, especially after a long day at work and away from your baby. But the reality of over-extending your baby past their bedtime can really run your baby very low on their energy tank.

In the moment, they might still respond and giggle at the fun and games of peek-a-boo or the tickle monster, but settling them is where the challenge lays. Their little bodies are flooded with adrenaline to help keep them awake past their usual bedtime. With them in fight or flight mode, even the most well sleep trained baby will have a restless night of sleep.

If there's a special occasion, then why not, just don't make a habit of it.

If it's been more than a year of broken nights, we often forget how much better we function for our family when we sleep well. Yes, the night cuddles are always nice, but let's not forget there's an entire day's worth of cuddles ready for us in the morning - and that's the honest feedback I get from my clients.

Dropping a few hundred bucks every six months when your baby outgrows their weighted sleep sack, (or a whopping $1500 when they get too big for their self-rocking crib) is a pricey set of training wheels, especially when you consider that they’re really just treating the symptom and not the cause.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BARELY SURVIVING MOMS AND WELL RESTED MOMS IS WHAT THEY CHOOSE to FOCUS THEIR ATTENTION ON. ⁠

The mom who gets consistent sleep knows how to look at wake windows and stay consistent with their practices. ⁠

So what happens when your little one stays awake past the time when these natural cues to sleep are activated? Well, the body assumes there’s a reason that it hasn’t been allowed to get to sleep, assumes there’s a need to stay awake, and fires up those daytime (fight or flight) hormones again. ⁠

And that’s when the trouble starts. ⁠

Because once those signals to stay awake get fired up, they’re tough to shut down, and baby’s already tired. So less sleep leads to more daytime adrenaline, and the cycle perpetuates itself. ⁠

So the best way to prevent this situation is to get baby to sleep (for both naps and bedtime) before they get past that window of opportunity. ⁠
