Strength training is important for older adults for so many reasons! It can also be scary to start working out, especially if you’re new to weight training. Here are 5 tips to get started!
1. Start slowly. Try body weight exercises like squats and elevated pushups.
2. Focus on form! Make sure you feel the exercises in the correct muscles. Don’t add load until you have mastered form.
3. Be consistent! Schedule your workouts on your calendar and make them a priority. One workout here and there will not give you results.
4. You don’t need to join a gym. You can get an effective workout with minimal equipment.
5. Hire a knowledgeable trainer to design a program for you based on your exercise goals.

I started making egg bites recently after a client and I were discussing ways she could add more protein to her meals, and I gotta say I love them! They’re easy to make and variations are endless. This morning I beat my personal best time in the parkrun, a time I set in 2019. The reason I’m posting about it is because I think it’s a great example of setting a goal and doing what needs to be done to achieve it. I focused on this one goal for weeks. I set myself up for success by running consistently, dialling in my nutrition, getting enough sleep and taking a rest day if I needed it. The biggest thing was believing I could do it! The next time you’re setting a goal, whether it’s setting a PB, or going to the gym 3 days a week, identify the steps you need to do to actually achieve it, and follow through with the plan. Then celebrate your achievement!
