💡 Did You Know - Foliage plants with variegated leaves require brighter light, because their two-toned leaves have less chlorophyll, which is needed for growth. If the plant is not getting enough light, it will respond by making all-green leaves so it can make more chlorophyll.⁠⁠

Fungus Gnats 101 🌿🚫⁠⁠

I’ve been getting so many questions lately about fungus gnat and wanted to share some tips! ⁠⁠

Gnats? Yes - those little annoying fruit-fly sized black flies by your plant. They can come from anywhere (they’re fairly common), and are attracted to moisture in soil. 🦟⁠⁠
⁠⁠
If you have fungus gnats, it's best to treat all of your plants, over a period of several weeks. This will ensure you're killing them at all stages of their lifecycle. 🚫⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Here's a few treatments I use to help with gnats. For best results, I'd recommend using multiple types of treatments simultaneously. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
✨ Neem Oil Spray - An organic pesticide with other anti-bacterial. Emulsify 1tsp of neem oil with 1/2 tsp of soap. Mix with 1L of water and add to a spray bottle. Shake well before use. Spray on plant leaves and on soil (before watering). ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
✨ Mosquito Dunks (or Bits) - A type of bacteria that kills gnats. Follow instructions and soak in water for a few nights. Then, remove the dunk or bits and water plants with this water. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
✨ Yellow Sticky Traps - Stick these around plant's soil to kill adult gnats. This prevents them from laying 100s of new eggs.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
✨ ACV Water Traps - Keep a few bowls of water with Apple Cider Vinegar around the plant to catch additional adult flies.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
✨ Allow Soil to Dry - Perhaps one of the most important items is finding a balance between too much and too little water. Moisture in soil attracts gnats, so less is more during treatment (but keep your plant's preferences in mind!).⁠⁠
⁠⁠
✨ Tip - Always quarantine new plants for at least 2 weeks! ⁠⁠

While you can find plants that are lower maintenance, there's just something so calming about looking at the leaves, new growth, and it's natural beauty. I also give them a quick manicure. 💁🏽‍♀️⁠

Here are a few of my favourite easy plants. As long as these ones have plenty of sun, they'll be happy. ☀️⁠

And if you forget to water them - don't worry! They're drought tolerant. Guaranteed good vibes all around! Plus, aloe is great for your skin and sunburns. 💥⁠

What I love most is that these plants are THRIVING in a NORTH facing window! Not all plants need (or even want) south facing light. Knowing which plants are right for your space is half the battle of keeping plants ALIVE. 🌱 💫⁠
