Yes I did wear my t-shirt when I went to CHECKOUT the BFA Graphics Portfolio show. Seemed fitting.

Apparently 2026 marks the 30th year of the BFA in Graphics program at the college! Kudos!

This year seven students presented both a major and a minor project. Lots of great work.

Sure wish we could have been there for the opening night. I would have loved to talk to the grads and the profs. Maybe next year!

Congratulations to everyone at And thanks again to for the tip about the event.

(The photo I’m holding up near the end is a photo of my late father, Canadian graphic designer Michael Lewis Pacey. He would have loved this show.)

The photo from my previous post showed my father, Michael Lewis Pacey, pretending to get into a sweet white corvette that just happened to park in front of his studio at 1162 Hornby Street.

The photo also gave a glimpse of the inside of his tiny studio and I was able to identify the six logos he had on display.

From L-R, top to bottom:
Ammo Power Tools
Andex Oil
Atlas Travel
Yukon Volleyball
Colleen Kennedy
B/K Electric

Five of the six marks were award winners.

More to come.

Michael Lewis Pacey in front of his studio at 1162 Hornby Street (at Davie) circa 1975.

Not his Corvette 😂

I’ve been searching for those photo for so long I was starting to think I imagined it.

This little black box of a building had been a restaurant before Pops turned it into the Vancouver headquarters of Supergraphics Design, an advertising design and illustration studio.

I remember the interior had wood paneling behind his drafting table, which faced the front door, and the small meeting area on the right had bright red walls.

My sister and I would walk here after school at Lord Roberts Elementary and draw until Pops finished work and then we would all walk home to our apartment at 990 Broughton in the West End.

Technical Aesthetics (Техническая эстетика in Russian) was a Soviet monthly journal published between January 1964 and July 1992 dedicated to questions of design with peak distribution of 30,000 copies.

According to art historian Alexandra Chiriac, the term technical aesthetics was invented in Russia in the 1960s to speak about the field of design, which wasn’t really developed in the country at the time, and which was promoted through the VNIITE research institute and the Technical Aesthetics magazine.

The magazine regularly exposed Western design trends and innovations, which were often compared with their Soviet counterparts.

Michael Lewis Pacey’s logo for AMMO Power Tools was included along with logos for Grupo Cinco, the German Writer’s Union, ATEX, Cinemateca de Cuba, and WLRN-TV, a public television station in Miami.

👍🏽 HUGE THANKS to Artem of .ge for discovering this publication and for reaching out to me. I would never have found this without him. дякую! dyakuyu!

The Owl and the Oarsman mascot logo was created by my father Michael Lewis Pacey in his studio on Hornby Street.

The popular restaurant operated in the 70’s and 80’s and was located in the Centennial Pavilion on Burnaby Mountain.

I can’t say I remember going there or to the Owl and the Engineer, which he also designed the logo for, as a family but I’m sure we must have.

I have some other ephemera from this restaurant, including the famous wooden paddle menu, that I will share another day.

I miss coming home and finding folders from Pops.

If he couldn’t fax his revisions or ideas to me, he would drive them over and leave them on our porch.

Miss you Papito.
