I found this “transcript” of a conversation Michael Lewis Pacey and I had when we were first discussing becoming partners.

I suggested “Pacey and Father” as I thought it would be a funny take on family businesses.

Initially he was into it but as we got closer to actually registering the name, he changed his mind and we settled for “Pacey and Pacey”.

I’m not sure when he wrote this note but I find the last line truly amusing as it could have been spoken by either of us.

I found the second note in a closet. It’s a list of movies he wanted to rewatch. Looks like he was still working on the concept years after. 😊

“LetterGraphics, Letters of Exuberance”, is a double-sided, five-panel “eye-tingling collection of the latest letterforms” available from Cooper & Beatty.

It features eight “beautiful, youthful types” that “range the spectrum from art nouveau to the para psychedelic, consciously designed to expand communication.”

“LetterGraphics, Letters of Exuberance”, is a double-sided, five-panel “eye-tingling collection of the latest letterforms” available from Cooper & Beatty.

It features eight “beautiful, youthful types” that “range the spectrum from art nouveau to the para psychedelic, consciously designed to expand communication.”

Mania
Rhythm
Skidoo (aka Gothic Bold)

Dimensions:
6” x 6” closed

As per Canada Modern, Cooper & Beatty was a prominent Toronto-based typesetting and design firm that played a foundational role in the evolution of modern Canadian graphic design between the 1950s and 1980s.

At the time of this publication they had two locations, on Wellington Street in Toronto and (interestingly) on Wellington Street in Montreal.

The Atlas Travel logo was third of six logos that graced the walls of the Supergraphics Design studio, at 1162 Hornby Street in Vancouver, in the mid 1970’s.

This logo was published in David Consuegra’s “abc of world’s trademark, a selection of 1476 trademarks” - Primera Edicion, David Consuegra, Editor and Publisher, Bogota, 1988, page 109

Found a collection of letters sent from Michael Lewis Pacey’s first studio at 704 North Hobart Boulevard in Los Angeles, California.

These letters were written to my mother, Efigenia, while she was in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the early 1970’s.

The logo on the envelope later became known as “The Graphic Statement” and won several design awards.

My later father Michael Lewis Pacey only visited Colombia once in his life. (Kind of strange when you consider that mom was Colombian 😂.)

The one time he did visit, in 1991, he made a point of seeking out the Colombian graphic designer David Consuegra. They actually got to meet and Pops was thrilled to be gifted a signed copy of Consuegra’s “abc” book.

I don’t think Pops mentioned that his country of origin was incorrectly listed as “English” (Inglaterra) instead of “Canadian”.

Another stage of my archiving “mission” has been accomplished.

Since my father, Michael Lewis Pacey, passed I have been making my way through his archives and sharing my discoveries.

To date I’ve uploaded six of Pops’ logos to the People’s Graphic Design Archive.

Each entry includes photos of related ephemera like negatives, pencil drawings, and photo mechanical transfers (PMTs).
