Tonight, I will be presenting to an ASL class at the University of British Columbia about Accessible Telecommunications and Ensuring Communication Equity of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Canadians.

Looking forward to educating ASL students about our current telecommunications and the story of how we got here today and how much more we need to do ahead and how they can support.

Thankful for the opportunity to educate and inform on my passion topic: Communication Equity

🎉 DWCC is 10 Years – Advancing Accessibility Through Policy 🎉

📌 Day #3: ABOUT DWCC – CRTC Expertise & Accessibility Lens

Over the past decade, DWCC has become a trusted and informed voice on telecommunications and broadcasting issues, offering policy expertise before the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission).

An accessibility lens is consistently applied to all of DWCC’s regulatory, policy, and technical work to ensure that telecommunications and broadcasting policies are inclusive and equitable for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Canadians.

Through this work, DWCC advocates for practical, forward-looking solutions that reflect the lived experiences and accessibility needs of our communities.

To celebrate DWCC’s 10 Years, we’re launching 36 days of DWCC — a countdown highlighting key milestones, infographics, and behind-the-scenes facts from the past decade. Each post will build up to a final master infographic on Day 36!

🎉 DWCC is 10 Years – Celebrating Our Membership 🎉

Founded on July 15, 2015, in alignment with the CAD-ASC AGM in Halifax, NS, the Deaf Wireless Canada Committee (DWCC) was co-founded by Lisa Anderson, Jeffrey Beatty, and Darryl Hackett. What began as a bold vision has evolved into a national force advocating for accessible telecommunications and broadcasting services for Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and hard-of-hearing Canadians.

As part of our mission, not only does DWCC have 15+ members who actively contribute to the organization’s internal structure and consultative efforts, but DWCC also offers membership to the public, empowering individuals with the identification needed to qualify for discounted accessibility plans from wireless service providers. These plans help reduce monthly costs and ensure equitable access to essential mobile communication services.

To celebrate, we’re launching 36 days of DWCC — a countdown highlighting key milestones, infographics, and behind-the-scenes facts from the past decade. Each post will culminate in a final master infographic on Day 36.

📌 Day #2: ABOUT DWCC – Membership

As of 2025, DWCC’s current membership proudly reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. Our team includes individuals who are Deaf-Blind, Francophone, LSQ users, IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour), and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This inclusive representation strengthens DWCC’s ability to advocate for equitable and accessible telecom and broadcasting services across Canada.
