RACHELLE KANEFSKY and CAROL WATTERSON love books, in all of their forms. Their professional roots are in the ever-changing Canadian publishing landscape, where for 25+ years they’ve each worked in a variety of roles. Both in-house and as independent publishing professionals, they’ve honed their skills in every aspect of the industry, from acquisitions, contracts, rights and development to editorial, production, design, and sales and marketing. Carol and Rachelle first learned the trade in some of Canada’s most esteemed publishing houses, including Macmillan Canada, HarperCollins, Raincoast Books, and ECW Press. In 1994, they both joined Raincoast, where they worked side by side on creating an impressive and enviable Canadian publishing program (remember Harry Potter?). What does all that experience mean for you? Excellent instincts and knowing what it takes to make a bestseller. They provide one-to-one guidance and direction to ensure that your book is a success. They're genuinely BEHIND THE BOOK, and they’re based in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, BC.

There are so many ways to give at this time of year, and to highlight a charity that is close to our hearts – the gift of books and reading – our new blog post features some Canadian literacy groups accepting donations, as well as organizations that collect gently used books. Happy holidays, everyone!

Every December, our book club prepares boxes for The Shoebox Project – a registered charity that collects and distributes gift-filled shoeboxes to local women impacted by homelessness across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. A shoebox filled with gifts  is a powerful remin

Congratulations to our client, David L. Thomas, on publishing The American College of Switzerland: Glory Days & Demise, 1963–1991.

Everyone who David knows from his days in Leysin has an interesting story about how they ended up there. This is his. This is also a story about the rise and fall of the American College of Switzerland, and the financial scandal that led to its demise.

New blog post on making that list, checking it twice, and getting out to your local bookstore ASAP.

Why? You guessed it: the supply chain is affecting the book industry, too!

The Reconciliation Pole, UBC. Was fortunate to see Haida master carver and hereditary Chief James Hart at work on it in September 2017. This 17-metre totem pole represents the victims and survivors of Canada's residential school system and encourages everyone who comes across it to learn more about the history of residential schools and to understand their role in reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.

Read books, watch films and documentaries, listen to podcasts, attend community events that reflect on the residential school experience and honour the stories of survivors. Be an ally, not only today – Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – but every day.

Five years ago, Robert Krell self-published his Holocaust memoir with us for his personal network of family, friends, and colleagues. Recently, Robert wanted his story to reach a broader audience, and this August 1st, his book will be released as part of Amsterdam Publishers’ Holocaust portfolio. Robert’s journey shows that for those authors who first choose to self-publish, the door to then traditionally publishing their books is not closed.

Having suffered Holocaust trauma as a child, Robert Krell’s childhood is defined by slience and hiding. Sounds from Silence is his courageous attempt to shed light on his own story.
