Rob Shaw: Forestry review finds five years of NDP policy has failed to stabilize sector

Experts argue centralized decision-making has led to closures, job losses and stalled planning

Two experts hired by the B.C. government to review the future of the province’s forestry sector did more than just issue recommendations this week. They quietly shredded more than five years of New Democrat forest policy that underpins Premier David Eby’s entire approach to the industry.

Foresters Garry Merkel and Shannon Janzen co-authored a report proposing a wholesale shift from government-led forestry decisions to as many as 100 community-led, area-based planning bodies.

It would be the most significant overhaul in forest policy in decades, with the goal of stabilizing the collapsing sector. Implicit in that recommendation is a blunt verdict on the current system: It isn’t working or sustainable. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar said he’ll discuss the recommendations with cabinet.

Strengthening BC's Forestry Sector

Ravi Parmar
Minister of Forests

"Forestry is a cornerstone of B.C.’s economy, but high tariffs and duties from the United States, combined with increasing transportation costs, are making it uneconomical to harvest, affecting the entire forestry supply chain.

This is unacceptable.

That’s why, we’re diversifying to new international markets, expanding existing markets, and finding new ways to innovate right here at home. All to strengthen our forestry sector so it works for people and communities in BC."

TLA’s Statement on Provincial Forestry Advisory Council’s Report: From Conflict to Care: BC’s Forest Future

The TLA appreciates and respects the thoughtful report released today by the Provincial Forestry Advisory Council. We welcome its focus on a cross-ministry approach, First Nations reconciliation and co-governance, stability and predictability for industry and investors, and community empowerment; priorities the TLA has long advocated on behalf of its members and the forest sector.

The TLA supports the overall direction of the report and its recommendations, including the shift from volume- to area-based management, adopting regional forest management areas, increased community engagement, First Nations co-management, and improved focus and alignment across the sector.

We look forward to reviewing the recommendations in greater detail, particularly in terms of how they align with the current crisis facing the forest industry, address high operating costs, and support the urgent need for access to fibre.

TLA Executive Director's Message

Industry, Communities, and the Public All Deserve a Seat at the Table

"Lately, I've been doing a lot of thinking about how democracy balances the rights of the few against the interests of the majority. This is a particularly complex topic in BC, where the legal standard is higher than other provinces and where we are advancing reconciliation efforts with Indigenous and First Nations Peoples."

TLA President's Message

Out of the Mud and Rolling Forward

"This is my last President’s message for the Truck LoggerBC magazine. Time does truly fly by serving the last two years as the TLA president. I can remember clearly my initial apprehension over what I had gotten myself into signing up for the TLA executive. I want to say with true honestly that the experience while challenging was also rewarding. As President and as a director of the TLA board, I have tried to help my fellow contractors and the BC forest industry during some darn tough years."

Congratulations to our scholarship recipients!

For more than 40 years, the TLA has been honoured to support students pursuing education in forestry. These scholarships represent more than financial support, they are an investment in the future of our industry and in the people who will help shape forestry in British Columbia for generations to come.

Thanks to the generosity of our members through donations to and participation in the live and silent auctions at our annual Convention + Trade Show. We were proud to raise $140,003 for the TLA Forestry Education Fund this year.

To our students: your hard work, dedication, and passion for forestry inspire us. To our members: thank you for helping make these opportunities possible.

This is the future of forestry — and it’s bright. 🌲

The auction was electric from start to finish — exciting, fast-paced, and so much fun!

Between the live and silent auctions, we’re proud to share that $140,003 was raised in support of the TLA Forestry Education Fund. This incredible result helps fund scholarships and forestry education programs, and it wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our members and supporters.

Thank you to everyone who donated, bid, and helped make it such a memorable night.

So much energy. So many great conversations.

The trade show floor was buzzing from start to finish — packed booths, familiar faces, and nonstop connection. This is what makes the TLA Convention + Trade Show so special.

Huge thanks to our exhibitors and everyone who came out to be part of it. The energy was unreal. 🌲
