Dear Bakau Community,

We are really sad to announce that Bakau Consulting is closing its doors.

After an incredible 7.5 years, we have made the difficult decision to wind down operations. We have spent the past couple of years fighting some really hard battles, and it has come to the point where we are sadly unable to continue.

We have always had really big dreams about the change that is possible when guided by our values, and are devastated that the political and economic climate is increasingly unsustainable for small, Black and queer-owned businesses like ours.

We have had an incredible time working with clients all over Canada and the world. We are so grateful to those of you who have shown kindness, support and enthusiasm for the work that we offer and who have been with us on this incredible journey!

We are so proud of what we have achieved over the years!

Bakau Consulting is made up of some truly incredible people, many of whom would appreciate your continued support in their respective endeavours.

This is a post I never thought I’d have to make, but I need to ask for your help.

Being vulnerable like this is tough, but I’ve always committed to being transparent in my work, so here’s the reality:

Many organizations are backing away from their promises to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion. This shift is affecting countless people in our industry, including small businesses like ours.

Even though anti-racism and work remain as important as ever, we’ve personally witnessed the decline in companies investing in these efforts.

It’s been a challenging year—filled with confusion, stress, and heartbreak.

But I’m not ready to give up. To keep going, we need your support.

Here’s how you can help:

3. Support other individuals and businesses in this field.

Intersectionality is a way of seeing the world. It helps us understand how systems that govern our lives are interconnected. Taking in the multifaceted nature of our experiences is a key part of what allows nuances and critical thinking in how we approach conversations of equity and power redistribution.

power: it’s part of how we move through our every day. what other choice do we have ? relationships to power are complex, to say the absolute least. naming power can help us recognize and locate how it shows up. have you heard of all three of these types before ?
