How do royalty companies actually work?

They give mining companies capital up front in exchange for a share of future revenue from the mine. Investors get exposure to the metal without the risk of running the mine, spread across many mines at once.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Yesterday, our Fiore Group office wore orange in honour of Survivors, their families and communities. Our shirts came from Native Northwest, featuring "The Children Are Coming Home" by Deanna Samuel, Ditidaht, Nuu-chah-nulth, and from MAKE Vancouver's fundraiser for the Urban Native Youth Association.

In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis Webstad arrived at St. Joseph's Mission residential school near Williams Lake, BC, wearing a new orange shirt her grandmother bought her. It was taken from her on the first day.

Her story became Orange Shirt Day, and the Orange Shirt Society she founded carries it forward.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission published 94 Calls to Action.

Call to Action 80 became September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Call to Action 92 asks businesses like ours to build respectful relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities.

By the Yellowhead Institute's final count in 2023, 13 of the 94 had been completed.

Most of BC was never covered by a treaty.

In 2000, the Nisg̱a'a Final Agreement became BC's first modern treaty: about 2,000 km² of land owned by the Nisg̱a'a Nation, its own government making its own laws, and rights protected by the Constitution.

The Nation calls it the end of a 113-year journey.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Most of BC was never signed away in a treaty. So who does the land belong to? In 1973 the Nisg̱a'a Tribal Council took that question to the Supreme Court of Canada. They lost the case, and it still changed the law. September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
