There is a contract behind every modern mine.

Before a mine gets built on a Nation's land, the company and the Nation sign an Impact Benefit Agreement (IBA), a contract that sets out what the Nation gets in return for their support. Jobs, training, environmental oversight, financial payments, and contracts for community-owned businesses are some of the main features of IBA agreements.

Each contract is negotiated directly between the mining company and the nation, making each IBA unique.

In simple terms, a royalty is a payment made on an ongoing basis for the right to use something.

With popular brands and icons, royalties are often paid as ongoing compensation for the use of intellectual property. In the franchise business, franchisees pay royalties to the franchisor for the right to use their brand and leverage their supply chain.

In the context of mining, a royalty is typically paid from a mining company to the royalty holder as the result of an arrangement made between the two parties.

In Canada, if a mine has gone into production in the past 30 years, the miner has signed an agreement with the local Indigenous Nation, and inside that agreement, there's a royalty.

Nobody had ever brought those royalties together into one public company. That's the opportunity Nations Royalty was built on.

Roughly $700K a year. Then $100 million on the balance sheet — effectively overnight.

That's the difference public markets make. On Breakthrough Nation, our CEO, Derrick Pattenden, joined host Karen Restoule to explain it: a royalty is worth far more than the cheque it pays in any single year — its real value is all the cash flow it will generate over the life of the mine. Public markets price it that way.

Same royalty. Very different number.
