Another few days of great conversations about the international mining industry at the “Metals Investors Forum” in Vancouver, Canada. This time I also had the benefit of connecting with geologist John Florek, President & CEO of Sankamap Metals Inc., (CNSX: SCU), an exploration company operating in the Solomon Islands, South Pacific.

In about 1997-1998, John Florek was one of my students at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he completed his Masters in Mineral Exploration. It is great to see his success over the past 28 years. Well done John!

Over 40 years ago, I and my colleagues were hiking over the rugged terrain in the Golden Triangle of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. I recently came across an air photo from that period of the Sulphurets Glacier area. (BC5504-No. 233), showing the wishbone shaped glacier. In the lower-left corner you can see the ice-fall from a higher glacier, causing the distinctive, uniformly curved "olgives", or standing waves, in the glacier below. In the hook of the glacier is Kerr Ridge, where we drilled into the Kerr Cu-Au Deposit, now a part of the giant KSM Project of Seabridge Gold. To the east of the glacier a sharp north-south lineament can be seen, plus a sub-parallel lineament adjacent to Brucejack Lake. This is where the high-grade Pretium Gold Mine is located today. What a mineralogically rich region this has proven to be. The old style air photos bring back memories of working in the pre-GPS exploration industry.⛏

I would like to say thanks and congratulations to Ross and Trisha Beaty who have been chosen for the "Friends of Education" award for 2026. I have known Ross since our days at UBC in Geological Sciences. Among many other awards they have received over the years, this one is equally well deserved.

The Friend of Education Award recognizes outstanding service or commitment to post-secondary or independent school education.

It is indeed an honour to have been a speaker, panelist, and participant over the years at the annual Mineral Exploration Roundup. A healthy and sustainable mining industry contributes to the economic benefit of our whole society. Best of success to you all.

FLASHBACK - 1991 - You never know who is going to pop up in your old photo collection, this time it was Dave Love in the Barney's Canyon Mine in Utah, USA. The distinguished Dr. Love looks more like a 'Where's Waldo' in this shot.

The Barneys Canyon is a gold mine located in Salt Lake county, Utah at an elevation of 6,594 feet, which opened in 1989 and closed in 2001. Along with the Melco pit, it was one of several open pit gold mines Kennecott had in the area. It was a Carlin type gold deposit mined in the 1990's, 5 miles north of the giant Bingham Canyon copper pit. Beautiful orpiment and realgar samples could be found in this location.
