Last week, our team was on the ground for Web Summit Vancouver. We saw some amazing talks, made meaningful connections, and heard the word ā€˜AI’ more times than we could count šŸ¤–

This year, a highlight was seeing our clients thriving and announcing successes at the conference, including an exciting health initiative to help people in BC living with diabetes.

We especially loved hearing Anthonia Ogundele speaking with passion and conviction about her work with Ethos Lab, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) innovation hub which is on a mission to increase representation in Innovation by empowering youth. As Anthonia said:

ā€œit’s not just a technical access challenge, it’s a cultural challenge.ā€

Young people need to see themselves as belonging in these spaces in order to create greater representation in STEAM.

We’re in awe of Anthonia’s leadership and can’t wait to see the impact she and Ethos Lab continue to create.

Our team traveled to New York City to attend the 2024 PR Daily Social Media & Digital Awards luncheon. These awards aim to recognize the brightest minds in social media and digital marketing and showcase their work.

We were first recognized as a finalist in the ā€œWellness categoryā€. This category celebrates work that effectively educates, inspires and engages audiences in adopting healthy habits and prioritizing overall wellness in their lives.

We’re honoured to take home the win in our category. At an event celebrating amazing content and marketing teams and their innovative campaigns, we couldn’t be more honoured to receive this recognition. A huge congratulations to everyone on our team for this accomplishment.

We’re partnering with Foundry, a leading provider of integrated health and wellness services for youth in British Columbia. As part of our work, we hosted youth, their families and caregivers at our office for an in-person engagement session. It’s always a treat to connect with new folks at our office because we get to share the space we all love.

We’re excited to continue this work with Foundry and look forward to revealing what we’ve been developing later this year. Stay tuned!

As part of our commitment to truth and reconciliation, we prioritize learning about Indigenous history and the effects of colonial systems on Indigenous people today. One of the ways we do this is through planned team activities that encourage learning and reflection.

Recently, we visited the UBC Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre. During our visit, we explored their interactive timeline of residential schools in Canada and learned about the Centre's important work—from education and community outreach, to supporting residential school survivors and their families.

Key takeaways from our visit include:
šŸ”ø A better understanding of the impact of residential schools on people today
šŸ”ø Awareness of the many resources available to learn about Canada’s history
šŸ”ø Insights into past and present colonial practices and their impact on Indigenous people

We understand that education is key to the journey of reconciliation and that all non-Indigenous people in Canada need to learn the truth about the atrocities of our past. To learn about the Centre and plan a visit with your team, check out their website: https://bit.ly/45ESIbA

A big thank you to the Centre for its work, and to our guide Jess, who shared valuable insights and provided resources for further learning.

The Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC) at UBC addresses the colonial impacts of Residential Schools and other policies imposed by the Canadian government on Indigenous Peoples, and ensures that this history is acknowledged, examined and understood within the UBC community...

There’s always something fun on CBC Kids’ channels. They have a knack for creating content that is both entertaining and informative, even to those of us who are older. They created a YouTube playlist about Indigenous history and culture. There you’ll discover books featuring Indigenous storytelling and learn about Indigenous dances, games, and even delicious bites that might be new to you. Check them out! https://bit.ly/3VcdwSI

Last year, our team members started University of Alberta's Indigenous Canada course to learn more about Canadian history, including the history of the Indian Residential School system and the intergenerational impacts of colonization. Throughout the course, we had many rich discussions about what we learned.

Our decision to take the course as a team was motivated by our desire to play an active role in Canada's work towards truth and reconciliation with Indigenous people. The Indigenous Canada course is a free educational resource that you can take too. It’s easy to access, and you can go through it at your own pace. Sign up here: https://bit.ly/4409sIH

70% of our team has completed it so far. Our newer team members have just started their learning journey, and we look forward to making this course a part of any new team member's journey with us.

Indigenous Canada is a 12-lesson course during which students can expect to acquire a basic familiarity with Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal relationships. This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) aims to expand the understandings held by many Canadians about these relationships.

ā€œWhat are we REALLY doing to fight climate change?ā€

This question came up at our staff retreat and challenged our team and leadership to seriously consider our contributions to climate action. We know we can always do more, and today, we’re excited to announce that we are now 1% for the Planet members.

Brandy and Natalie, our co-founders, discuss the catalyst for this decision, what it means to be part of this international group, their thoughts on the process of joining, and our organization’s next steps. Read more: https://bit.ly/3V3U2j3
