When I'm dealing with a wasp problem, I'm not just looking at the wasps flying around the yard.

The first thing I want to know is where the nest is.

Around Metro Vancouver, I usually start by checking the roofline, eaves, decks, sheds, fences, and trees because that's where I find most nests during August.

Once I know where the activity is coming from, I can deal with the nest safely. Then I look around the rest of the property for anything that's encouraging the wasps to stick around, like fallen fruit, food scraps, or sheltered areas where new nests could start.

The best results usually come from doing both—removing the active nest and helping homeowners make the property less inviting for wasps in the future.

Before you call anyone about wasps, spend a few minutes watching where they're flying.

I always tell homeowners not to focus on the wasps themselves at first. Watch them for a minute or two and see if they keep heading back to the same spot.

Then take a walk around the property.

Check under the eaves, around the roofline, underneath the deck, inside sheds, and along fence lines. Those are some of the most common places I find nests this time of year.

It also helps to pick up fallen fruit, keep rubbish bin lids closed, and cover food or sugary drinks when you're eating outside.

These small things won't remove an active nest, but they can make your yard a lot less attractive to wasps.

I get a lot more wasp calls around Metro Vancouver in August than any other time of the summer.

Most homeowners don't notice the nest first. They notice the wasps.

A couple flying around the deck. One or two showing up every time they sit down to eat outside. Before long, they're seeing them around the barbecue, the patio table, and even near the back door.

Those small signs are usually worth paying attention to.

By August, wasp nests have had months to grow, so it's normal to see more activity than you did earlier in the summer.

When I’m called out for a wasp problem, the first thing I do isn’t reach for treatment.

I start by finding the nest.

Across Metro Vancouver, many wasp issues begin the same way — increased wasp activity around decks, rooflines, sheds, fences, or people noticing a steady stream of wasps flying to and from the same spot.

Once I locate where they’re nesting, I inspect the surrounding area to see why they chose that location. It could be under the eaves, inside a wall void, beneath a deck, or tucked away in another sheltered space that often goes unnoticed.

That’s an important step.

Simply knocking down a visible nest doesn’t always solve the problem if there’s still an active colony or another nest nearby.

The best approach is to safely eliminate the source of the activity and make sure the area is properly assessed before the problem has a chance to grow.

When I’m handling an ant problem, I’m not just looking for the ants you can see.

I want to know where they’re coming from.

Across Metro Vancouver, most ant jobs start with the same signs — a trail along the baseboards, ants around the kitchen, activity near windows, or small groups showing up in the same spot every day.

Once I find where the activity is happening, I look for how they’re getting inside. That might be a tiny gap around a window, a crack in the foundation, a door threshold, or another small opening that’s easy to overlook.

That part matters.

If those access points and the conditions attracting ants aren’t addressed, the problem can return even after the visible ants are gone.

The best results usually come from treating the current activity while also reducing what’s bringing them back.

Most of the time, homeowners notice the wasps long before they find the actual nest. The challenge is that nests are often hidden under rooflines, inside sheds, beneath decks, or in other hard-to-see areas.
