You know the Vancouver Special...
now meet the Vancouver Stair.

Vancouver’s recently adopted building code update allows for a 6 storey building with a single exterior stair. The stair can be combined with the hallway/landing and an elevator to create a very efficient core.

The stair needs to be able to cross-vent (to remove any smoke that might accumulate in a fire) which means it needs to be partially open, with 50% of the wall area that can be glass, louvers, etc to provide weather protection.

Once the zoning is updated to allow apartment density (2 to 3 FSR) on small lots, then we may see that the Vancouver Stair becomes the backbone of a New Vancouver Special.

An all-electric, Step 5 energy efficient home on a steep, rocky and challenging site, but nice views from both floors. The entry bridge provides access from the parking pad to the upper floor living / dining areas.

Single Stair Urbanism

Our vision for the future of Vancouver is a pivot away from “mansions and towers”, and a shift away from arterial density, where noise and pollution are a fact of life.

Instead: a dense, walkable, accessible and climate adaptive city made up small lot single-stair buildings with lots of adjacent green space.

Zero emissions stacked flats, plexes and lane houses mixed with existing homes and businesses.

We can make this shift happen.

The next up in the inspired theme:
Our renovation addition to Erickson’s ‘wedge’ house. The gutter in question is his (a linear channel with a rain chain) - but it was.a significant feature of the original house given that all the roof water and the visual lines terminated at that feature - so we worked to ensure its visual continuity through to the inside of our new foyer and dining room. We also built a dry creek bed and entry boardwalk to replace tbe original rain receiving cistern feature.
