This week and Serena Lickers Mendizábal hosted a break out session: ‘Just Transition’ Community Mapping & Visioning in Current Political Landscape.

Together, the delegates mapped the current political landscape, named what’s standing in the way, and laid out a vision of the clean energy future Indigenous communities want to see.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with folks at the Indigenous Clean Energy 2026 National Gathering.

Today, Sacred Earth is holding Survivors, our families, and our communities extra close.

For several members of our team, the harms caused by the Indian residential school system are personal and intergenerational. Our parents and grandparents experienced this system, and its ongoing legacy continues to be felt in our families and communities today.

Reconciliation requires more than acknowledgment. It demands ongoing action.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action name responsibilities for governments, institutions, schools, workplaces, media, and communities. The Calls make clear that reconciliation must be carried through meaningful change, not simply recognized once a year.

For those of us working within organizations and institutions, this means considering where we hold influence, asking what action is being taken, and supporting Indigenous governance and leadership in the work ahead.

Our relative the Sun is signaling to us that we are now passing through a doorway into a new season for us here in the northern hemisphere.

The days are growing shorter, the temperature is dropping, leaves are falling and much of creation is beginning to prepare for the colder months ahead.

It’s during this time people naturally begin to shift from outward action to inward reflection. Many people around the world are facing challenging times. Here on Turtle Island, many are still recovering from the increasingly severe effects of anthropogenic climate change. Despite the hardships, we hope that gratitude can still be found.

As the Sun continues its sacred journey across our skies, we ask that our friends we’ve made along the way take some time today to send out some love and thanks to the sun, Mother Earth, and the people who call her home.

Sacred Earth Managing Director Serena Lickers Mendizábal speaks to part of what makes an energy transition just: Indigenous leadership, sovereignty, and decision-making rooted in our own governance systems.

For us, this means working alongside communities to bring their visions to life, guided by community consent and priorities, while building the skills and capacity to sustain that work for generations to come.

As we continue to move towards a clean energy future, it is imperative we transform the relationships and systems that have excluded Indigenous peoples from decisions about our territories. Indigenous sovereignty needs to be at the centre of that future we are building.

The CEOs of BlackRock, Blackstone and other representatives of the global 1% are coming to Toronto this September. On the menu? Privatized airports and water systems. Pipelines and toll roads. Ports and AI data centres. Housing and mineral deposits from stolen Indigenous land.

The “Many vs the Money” counter-summit at OCAD University will open with a keynote conference from Naomi Klein and Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor and special guests on Saturday, Sept 12, an all-day teach-in featuring Indigenous land defenders, movement organizers, and labour activists on Sept 13, and a protest against PM Carney’s privatization summit on Monday, Sept 14 at 6:00 pm.

Sacred Earth will be heading to Tsuut’ina territory in Treaty 7 this upcoming October for the Indigenous Clean Energy biannual National Gathering ⚡️

This event is focussed on bringing together Indigenous energy leaders, practitioners, and allies. It offers a unique opportunity to build new partnerships, inform policy, and create pathways to advance a just energy transition in so-called Canada.

Federal and provincial governments have been talking about a clean energy future. But the transition to clean energy future must be more than changing where our energy comes from.

A Just Transition means moving away from fossil fuels and the systems of exploitation that created the climate crisis, while building energy systems rooted in Indigenous rights, sovereignty, community ownership, and care for land, water, and future generations.

Across Turtle Island, Indigenous communities are already showing us what this can look like.

Renewable energy. Energy sovereignty. Community-led solutions. Cultural and language revitalization. Economic opportunity. Protection of the land and water.

The future is already being built through strong investments and major projects. It’s imperative we work collectively across sectors and jurisdictions to ensure we build a sustainable, equitable, and just future for all.
