MEET LEXI, OUR ALBERTA TAXIDERMY WORKSHOP TEACHER!

Lexi recently completed our five-week intensive taxidermy training program and is now bringing Pretty Dead Taxidermy’s beginner workshops to Alberta.

Based in Lethbridge, Lexi will be travelling to different cities across the province each month, teaching hands-on rat taxidermy, butterfly pinning, and other beginner workshops.

Her classes are designed for complete beginners, so you do not need any previous taxidermy experience. Everything you need will be provided, and Lexi will guide you through the entire process step by step.

We are so excited to have Lexi representing Pretty Dead Taxidermy in Alberta and cannot wait for you to meet her!

A little update to our opening hours for September!

For the month of September, Pretty Dead Taxidermy will be open:

Monday–Friday
11:00 am–4:00 pm

We will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays while we take some dedicated weekend time to focus on studio projects and prepare for our upcoming workshops.

Regular opening hours will return in October. Thank you for understanding, and please plan your visit accordingly!

After a very long wait, we are so pleased to announce that Pretty Dead Taxidermy’s beginner workshops are coming to Alberta!

Whether you have been waiting years to try taxidermy or have only just discovered it, these workshops are designed for complete beginners—no previous experience is needed.

A father–son taxidermy day 🐀

These two joined us for a private rat taxidermy workshop and absolutely nailed it. Just look at those rats — and those proud faces!

Private workshops are one of my favourite ways to teach. They’re relaxed, hands-on, and we can work at your own pace while you learn the whole process from start to finish.

And yes, taxidermy apparently makes for some pretty excellent family bonding. 😂

Private workshops are available for individuals, couples, families and small groups. No previous experience needed.

Did you know that a lot of modern fish taxidermy isn’t actually the original fish?

Fish taxidermy is a little different from most other forms of taxidermy.

Today, many trophy fish mounts are replicas, particularly when anglers practise catch and release.

Instead of keeping the fish, measurements and photographs can be taken before it is released. A replica is then created to match the fish’s size, shape, markings and colouration — allowing the angler to keep the memory while the actual fish goes back into the water.

Traditional fish taxidermy, however, uses the actual skin of the fish. The skin is carefully preserved and mounted over a form, while parts that don’t preserve well — particularly the eyes — are recreated. Colour is also incredibly important because much of a fish’s brilliant colouration changes or disappears after death, meaning the taxidermist has to bring those colours back during the finishing process.

Older museum fish mounts like this one are wonderful examples of how fish taxidermy has been done over the years.

This specimen belongs to the shíshálh Nation tems swiya Museum in Sechelt, British Columbia, and we’ve had the privilege of restoring it so it can return to their collection.

Summer is winding down, which means it’s almost time for rainy Vancouver days, darker evenings and making dead things with us again.

Our first round of late summer + autumn workshops is now open for booking!

All of our workshops are beginner friendly, and all materials and specimens are provided. Come by yourself, bring a friend, learn something weird and leave with something you made yourself.

More autumn workshops are coming soon, including bird wing preservation, Death’s-head moths and some appropriately spooky October projects.

Duckling butts! 🍑🐥

Yes, you read that correctly.

Tiny fluffy duckling butts, complete with little feet sticking up in the air. Because sometimes taxidermy doesn’t need to be serious.

A little ridiculous, very fluffy, and guaranteed to make people look twice. 😂

What did you get up to this long weekend?

We spent ours turning a rooster into a beautiful taxidermy mount!!

There’s something incredibly rewarding about teaching someone a traditional skill and watching their confidence grow throughout the day. Every workshop is different, and every student leaves with a one-of-a-kind piece they created themselves.
