At Silverson HR, consulting isn’t just about policies and processes — it’s about people. One of the fun things we love to do is plan activities that bring teams together, add some laughter to the day, and of course… enjoy good food!

Our client had a wonderful afternoon stepping away from the usual routine to relax, recharge, and simply have fun. A well-deserved break and a great way to say thank you to their team. 💙

Because sometimes, the best investment you can make in your people is time well spent together.

“Great employees think like owners.
Great owners think like employees.”

It’s simple — and it’s true.

The best employees don’t just show up for a shift. They take ownership, solve problems, and treat the brand like it’s their own.

The best leaders don’t hide behind titles. They roll up their sleeves, stay connected to the work, and never forget what it feels like on the front lines.

When contribution matters more than hierarchy, companies thrive.
Because culture > titles. Always.

How to Keep a High Performer Engaged at Work

High performers are the backbone of a successful team. They deliver consistent results, take initiative, and raise the bar for others. But if not properly supported, they can quickly become disengaged—and even seek opportunities elsewhere.

So how do you keep them inspired, invested, and growing?

1. Give Them Complex, Impactful Work
High performers don’t just want to do their job—they want to solve things. They thrive on tackling challenges that have real impact. Keep them engaged by assigning projects that stretch their abilities and align with company goals.

Harvard Business Review notes that top talent stays where they feel their work has purpose and influence.
(HBR, “Why Do We Keep Paying Superstar Employees Like Everyone Else?”, 2022)

2. Provide Specific, Timely Recognition
General praise like "Great job!" isn’t enough. High performers want to know *why* their work mattered. Share how their effort moved the needle, improved a process, or positively influenced the team.

Research from the O.C. Tanner Institute found that 79% of employees who quit their jobs cite a lack of appreciation as a key reason.
(O.C. Tanner, “Global Culture Report,” 2023)

3. Support Their Growth—Even If It Means Stretching
Don’t assume top performers are content just because they’re succeeding. Talk openly about their career goals. Offer training, mentorship, or opportunities to lead new initiatives.

According to LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report, 94% of employees would stay longer at a company that invests in their learning.
(LinkedIn Learning, “2023 Workplace Learning Report”)

4. Create a Two-Way Relationship
Include them in strategic conversations and genuinely ask for their input. High performers are often natural problem solvers—use that to your advantage and make them feel like a partner, not just an employee.

McKinsey reports that when employees are involved in decision-making, they’re more likely to feel empowered and committed to their roles.(McKinsey & Company, “The State of Organizations 2023”)

5. Protect Them from Burnout
Just because someone can take on more doesn’t mean they should. Be mindful not to overburden them. Respecting boundaries and encouraging time to recharge is essential to long-term engagement.

In Summary:
High performers don’t need micromanaging—but they do need mentoring, meaningful challenges, and genuine appreciation. Keep them engaged by treating them like the asset they are, and they’ll keep raising the standard for your entire organization.

The Joy of Early Morning Air Travel: Discovering Connections at 30,000 Feet

As an HR professional, my passion for understanding people extends far beyond the office. I’ve always been curious about what makes people tick, what their life stories are, and how they’ve navigated their careers. This curiosity often finds an outlet during early morning air travel, a time when the world is just waking up, and so are the travelers making their way to new destinations.

There’s something uniquely peaceful about airports in the early hours—fewer crowds, a gentle hum of activity, and the anticipation of a day filled with new experiences. Once on the plane, with the sun beginning to rise, there’s a certain magic in the air. The person seated next to you isn’t just another passenger; they’re a potential gateway to a fascinating conversation, a life story waiting to be shared.

Engaging with fellow travelers has led to some of the most enriching conversations I’ve ever had. There’s an unspoken camaraderie among early morning fliers; perhaps it’s the shared experience of venturing out before the world is fully awake, or maybe it’s the simple fact that at 30,000 feet, with limited distractions, people are more inclined to open up.

These encounters aren’t just fleeting moments of small talk; they’re opportunities to dive into diverse experiences and perspectives. I’ve found mutual ground with people from all walks of life—seasoned business professionals, adventurous solo travelers, and even first-time fliers. Each conversation reveals something new, whether it’s about their career path, personal challenges, or the destinations they’ve visited. These interactions not only enrich my own perspective but also reaffirm my passion for working in HR, where understanding and connecting with people is essential.

Air travel, in many ways, mirrors my role in HR. Both involve navigating through different scenarios, adapting to new environments, and most importantly, connecting with people. The curiosity that drives me to strike up a conversation at 30,000 feet is the same curiosity that makes me eager to understand an employee’s journey within an organization or to facilitate a team’s growth and cohesion.

In a world where we often feel isolated despite being constantly connected, these airborne encounters serve as a reminder of our shared humanity. Everyone has a story, and sometimes, all it takes to uncover it is the willingness to ask a simple question or share a friendly smile.

So, the next time you find yourself on an early morning flight, don’t shy away from engaging with the person next to you. You never know where the conversation might lead or what insights you might gain. After all, people are endlessly fascinating, and every flight offers a new opportunity to connect, learn, and find common ground at 30,000 feet.
