Meet Alyssa, a welding apprentice whose journey into the skilled trades began as a Grade 10 co-op student at DMC Mining Services.
At the time, she was still exploring her options and figuring out what career path she wanted to pursue. She had little experience in the trade. She didn't know how to strike an arc or work in a shop environment. The world of welding was completely new to her, but she was intrigued.

With the support of mentors who took the time to teach, explain, and encourage her, Alyssa seized the opportunity to build her confidence and take her welding skills to the next level. She had a willingness to learn and was always eager for hands-on opportunities.

Working alongside experienced team members, she quickly discovered that the lessons learned in the shop often go far beyond what can be taught in a classroom. As Alyssa puts it, having someone who continually pushes you to improve and practice makes a huge difference when you're learning something new.
One moment stands out in particular.

While still a student, Alyssa was trusted to contribute welds to a component that would later undergo inspection. When the inspection was completed, every weld passed.
For someone still early in her career, it was a meaningful reminder that hard work, patience, and dedication to learning can lead to real results.

Today, Alyssa is continuing her welding apprenticeship and has her sights set on earning her Red Seal certification and eventually working underground in the mining industry.

For other young women considering a career in mining or the skilled trades, her advice is simple:
"Don't be intimidated. Give it a shot and see where it takes you." — Alyssa
As we recognize International Day of Women in Mining, Alyssa's story reminds us that talent can come from anywhere. Sometimes all it takes is an opportunity, a willingness to learn, and a team willing to invest in the next generation.

🚨 Attention Team! 🚨

This month, our HSEC focus is Heat Stress Management — because rising temperatures, humidity, physical exertion, and demanding work conditions can quickly create serious health and safety risks on site.

Heat stress occurs when the body can no longer cool itself effectively. Underground environments, heavy equipment, PPE, radiant heat, and physically demanding tasks can all increase the body’s heat load.

The reality is, heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly — from fatigue and dehydration to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke if warning signs are ignored.

Start each shift by asking:
✅ Am I hydrated before starting work?
✅ Am I recognizing early signs of heat stress in amyself and others?
✅ Am I taking breaks and pacing work when conditions require it?
✅ Do I know the work-rest requirements for current heat conditions?

Here are a few key reminders:
🔹 Drink water and electrolytes consistently throughout the shift — don’t wait until you feel thirsty.
🔹 Take scheduled rest breaks and use shaded or cool areas when available.
🔹 Monitor yourself and your crew for signs of heat stress or fatigue.
🔹 Wear appropriate PPE and breathable clothing whenever possible.
🔹 Reduce physical exertion during extreme heat conditions.
🔹 Use the buddy system — look out for one another.
🔹 Speak up immediately if symptoms begin to develop.

🛑 STOP AND ASSESS — How hot are the conditions? How demanding is the task? Are controls in place?

A few minutes of prevention can stop a serious medical emergency before it happens. Let’s stay alert, manage heat exposure, and protect each other throughout every shift.
