Good morning! I wanted to remind everyone that it is the law to pull over for emergency vehicles with their lights and sirens activated.
After spending some time on Vancouver Island this summer and seeing how everyone there pulled over and stopped for emergency vehicles, it made me wonder whether drivers in Alberta don’t know the law or simply don’t care.
On my way back from a motor vehicle collision this morning, an ambulance travelling down Highway 16 with its lights and sirens activated approached from behind. I turned on my four-way flashers and started pulling onto the shoulder. The semi behind me then attempted to pass me, directly in front of the approaching ambulance. (And no, I did not suddenly slow down in front of the semi or expect them to stop abruptly.)
Please remember that pulling over for emergency vehicles isn’t just courteous—it’s the law. Those few seconds you save aren’t worth delaying emergency responders or putting lives at risk.
