Google wiping reviews from business profiles is not a small glitch for local businesses.
It can erase years of customer proof overnight.
A recent video broke down several businesses that lost thousands of Google reviews from their profiles. Some of those reviews may have been caught in Google's spam/fake-review cleanup, but the impact is the same for the business owner: fewer reviews, weaker social proof, and less trust showing up where customers are actively deciding who to call.
That matters because Google reviews are not just a vanity metric.
They influence:
- Whether a customer trusts you
- Whether your Google Business Profile looks active and credible
- How strong your local presence appears compared to competitors
- What language Google has available to understand your services
- How your business may show up in map results and AI-assisted local search
The real lesson is this:
Do not let your entire reputation live in one place.
Google reviews are still incredibly important, but they should not be the only proof your business has. Local businesses need to build reputation signals across their website, service pages, photos, GBP posts, Facebook, industry directories, citations, and other trusted places customers and search engines can verify.
Also, start tracking your review count.
If you manage a local business, screenshot your Google Business Profile regularly, monitor review changes, and ask customers for specific reviews that mention the service, the problem solved, the location, and the outcome.
Google can change the rules at any time.
The businesses that are hardest to hurt are the ones with proof everywhere.
