Here’s another fascinating 📚 STORIES FROM THE STACKS 📚

This 19th-century black-and-white wood engraving captures a two-masted, side-wheel paddle steamer underway. Vessels like this were an important part of connecting people, places and postal routes across waterways.

There’s something special about an old engraving like this — it gives us a glimpse into a world when steam, sail and the postal service helped keep a rapidly changing world connected.

You never know what you might discover tucked away in our warehouse!

Today’s find is this fascinating photograph showing the mail changing horses at “The Falcon” in Walthamstowe.

Long before modern transportation and overnight delivery, changing horses was an essential part of moving mail along its route. Scenes like this offer a wonderful glimpse into the everyday workings of postal history — and the people, horses and places that helped keep the mail moving.

MINT OR USED — WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

You may have heard collectors talk about “mint” and “used” stamps. But what does that actually mean?

MINT
A mint stamp has not been used through the postal system. Depending on the stamp and how it's been preserved, it may still have its original gum on the back.

USED
A used stamp has been through the mail and normally has a cancellation or postmark showing it was used.

🔎 So which one is better?

That's where collecting gets interesting! Some collectors prefer mint stamps, while others specifically collect used stamps. And for some issues, a used example can be much more interesting—or harder to find—than a mint one.

📖 Side note: Don't throw away an old envelope just because the stamp has been cancelled. The entire envelope can sometimes tell a fascinating postal history story!
