Most construction company owners are stuck wearing every hat. Selling, managing projects, chasing money, putting out fires.

The top 2% of builders break out of that cycle. They build companies that run and grow without them.

On June 17, our CEO Paul Atherton sits down with Eric Fortenberry, CEO of JobTread, to break down how.
What you'll walk away with:

- The 5 stages of a self-managed construction company, and why most builders never get past stage 2
- The 3 things every scalable construction company has in common
- The blind spots quietly capping your growth, and how to break them
- A hiring process that builds a leadership team you can actually delegate to
- The 4 lead streams every builder needs beyond referrals
- How to attack your Chart of Accounts and free up overhead

If you're ready to stop being the bottleneck, this one's for you.

Highspire Connect 2026 is a wrap — and we are still feeling energized by it.

100 attendees in the Canadian Rockies. Three days of masterminds, keynotes, fireside conversations, and sessions that went deep on building science, wealth, tax strategy, AI, and real estate.

We are so grateful for every single person in that room. This is a one of a kind space for construction company owners, and we are already looking forward to bringing everyone back together in January.

HX 2027 Los Cabos, stay tuned for more details!

Something we've observed after years of working alongside founders and operators:

The businesses that struggle to grow almost always have a leader stuck in crew boss mode — holding all the knowledge, managing every detail, being the bottleneck without realizing it.

The ones that scale have leaders who've stepped into the CEO seat. They've built a vision, the roles around it, and goals broken down into pieces their team can own.

It's a pattern we see again and again.

Something we’ve noticed working with a lot of construction companies:

Revenue grows… but profit doesn’t always follow.

On paper, the business is getting bigger.
More jobs. More volume. More people.

But the bottom line doesn’t move the way you’d expect.

When we dig into it, one of the first places it shows up is in overhead.

Not necessarily that it’s too high—
but that it’s not being managed with the same level of intention as the rest of the business.

The companies that consistently perform in the top tier tend to treat overhead differently.

They understand how it behaves.
They track it closely.
And they make sure it’s actually supporting profitability—not quietly working against it.

This carousel breaks down one of the core areas: overhead efficiency.

A shift happens when the owner is no longer the default person solving every operational issue.

What we often notice is that once an owner has someone who can truly help keep them out of the field, the whole business starts to change.

Because for many owners, being pulled into day-to-day operations can take up 20, 30, even 50 hours a week.

And when that happens, the higher-level work gets pushed aside — sales, marketing, team development, strategic planning, and thinking about what comes next.

The shift creates space.

Space to focus on the parts of the business that actually drive growth.

The parts that help turn a construction company into something more scalable, more valuable, and more self-managed.

It’s not just about making a hire.

It’s about changing the owner’s role entirely.

We're proud to welcome Jeremy Belleau to Highspire as an Executive Business Coach.

Jeremy brings a proven track record of working with builders across North America and Europe, from custom home builders and renovators to specialty trades and commercial contractors. His structured, LEAN-informed approach helps companies sharpen operations, strengthen financial performance, and build scalable systems that last.
Jeremy is a grounded, people-first leader with a strong commitment to craftsmanship.

We are humbled to have him on our team as we continue helping builders operate as well-run, self-managed companies.

One of the things we have come across is that so many owners are trapped in the day to day.

This happens ... because ... their company's operating framework lives in their head.

And the company can only grow as fast as the owner can keep up ... this has a ceiling to it. The owners who break through that ceiling do one thing differently.

They put the business on paper. Processes, roles, who owns what, who to go to for which question — all of it documented. Highspire did that for you with Trainual.

And with AI in the mix, the team has their own personal Einstein level IQ assistant working with them every step of the way.

This is a system for managing human energy and driving real accountability.

This is the clear path to stepping out of the day to day.

At 65 the shock is real.

Most people get there and realize they should have prepared more, from both a wealth-building and wealth-protection perspective.

Builders spend decades pouring everything into their companies. But the business is only one piece of the wealth equation. Without the right strategy outside of it, even strong operators can find themselves underprepared for what comes next.

On May 12, we're hosting a Highspire client-exclusive webinar with Sarah Cronin, where she'll break down:

- How to build wealth outside of real estate
- The assumptions quietly working against your financial future
- What actually preparing for retirement looks like, before it's too late

If you've ever wondered whether you're doing enough to set yourself up for the future, this one is for you.
Because the work you're doing today should pay off for decades to come.
