The SSTOA worked in partnership with local Indigenous communities to organize and operate the coast’s first largescale shoreline marine debris clean-up in BC, removing over 330 tons of marine waste from our shorelines.

They also collected valuable data on reclaimed debris which was published in a formal report designed to:
🐋 Inform the BC government and residents on the marine debris and ocean plastic crisis unfolding in Coastal BC and around the world
🦅 Detail the accomplishments of the marine debris cleanup expeditions
🐟 Highlight the economic benefits of the tourism sector

Introducing Victoria Distillers, our third and final COVID-19 Community Leaders award recipient! ⭐

During the pandemic, Victoria Distillers addressed the hand sanitizer shortage by using the leftover alcohol by-product from their small-batch spirits to create hand sanitizer in partnership with Nezza Naturals Inc., which they distributed for free to frontline workers, emergency services, and non-profits. Their quick response fulfilled demand when vulnerable populations needed it most 🦠😷

Meet Outer Shores Expeditions, our next COVID-19 Community Leaders award recipient! 🙌

When tourism halted during the pandemic, Outer Shores co-led the Marine Debris Removal Initiative as part of the Small Ship Tour Operators Association. They partnered with local First Nations communities and small coastal businesses to remove 337 tons of marine debris from BC’s shorelines.

This initiative was not only great for the planet, but also supporting the survival and recovery of the tourism industry by providing employment each year to:
⚓ 110 seasonal employees that were experiencing pandemic layoffs
🌊 60 First Nations crews
🛥️ 18 contractors

A big congratulations to Cowichan Green Community, one of this year’s COVID-19 Community Leaders award recipients! 🎊🎉

Cowichan Green Community facilitated access to fresh, nutritious food during the pandemic by providing emergency meals and food hampers to food insecure households and temporary housing shelters. They also established an Emergency Food Task Force with 35 organizations to ensure that the community had enough food for emergency situations. Their quick pivot to provide additional emergency food programming ensured that the needs of marginalized community members were met during this challenging time 💚

Give it up for the first of our two Social Impact award winners, Community Salons! 👏

Community Salons integrates equity, diversity, and inclusion into their mission, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and that financial means don’t dictate the quality of service received. They reduce barriers to accessing haircuts with a pay-it-forward “Community Hair Bank” model that provides free, no-questions-asked haircuts to those in need. All hair cuts are also gender-neutral and priced based on duration, easing the burden for gender nonconforming clients. ✂️
