🌲🛶 VICTORIA SENIORS (55+) - this is SO COOL!!

We recently reconnected with the wonderful team at Power To Be, and we want more older adults in our community to know about what they are offering!

We had the opportunity to visit Power To Be's beautiful Prospect Lake site last year, and we were absolutely blown away by what they've created. Their site and programming are designed to make outdoor experiences accessible to people of all abilities - and they now have a FREE Older Adults & Seniors Program for adults 55+!

And there are two fantastic opportunities coming up:

🥾 September 9 - Malahat SkyWalk Field Trip
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Shuttle pickup is available from Saanich Commonwealth Place. Spaces need to be secured ahead of time, so contact Power To Be at [email protected] or 250-385-2363 if you'd like to participate.

🛶 October 7 - Older Adults & Seniors Have A Go Day
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
📍 Power To Be, 4633 Prospect Lake Road
FREE + drop-in!

Come experience the outdoors, meet new people and have a go at activities like canoeing, nature walks and more!!

One of the things we care deeply about is helping older adults continue to be part of their community and keep doing things that bring connection, purpose and FUN into their lives!

Sometimes the biggest barrier is simply getting there - or not wanting to go alone.

If something like this sounds wonderful for you or an older adult in your life, but transportation or having someone alongside you is the piece standing in the way, talk to us. We may be able to help with transportation and accompaniment! 💜

And even if you don't need us - GO CHECK OUT POWER TO BE! We think what they're doing for older adults in our community is pretty fantastic. 🌲

🌻 A LITTLE TUESDAY MORNING IDEA FOR THE 55+ CROWD!!

We have some pretty great neighbours here at the Stadacona Centre! 💜

This week, Minh from Kumon Oak Bay popped over to tell us more about their Brain Health for Seniors program happening right next door to us! 🌿

Every Tuesday from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM, adults 55+ can join them for a friendly, engaging morning focused on keeping the mind active, practicing problem-solving, building confidence and enjoying some social connection along the way.

And since you're already here...

🌻Caregiver Spotlight: Meet Rosanna

For Rosanna, caregiving begins with something beautifully simple: getting to know the person.

She believes every older adult brings a lifetime of experiences, perspectives, values, and wisdom - and that there's so much we can learn when we take the time to listen.

💬 “I enjoy learning about someone else’s experience in life, their perspective, and their values. There is a magnitude of information to be gleaned from our elders.”

Rosanna's commitment to helping others began many years ago through her work supporting youth. As her own parents have gracefully moved into their 80s, that perspective has grown to include an even deeper understanding of what older adults may need to continue living with dignity, independence, and connection.

And one of Rosanna's beliefs really resonates with us:

💬 “Nobody is an island - we are not meant to live in isolation, whether we're young or old.”

YES!!!!💜

Because caregiving isn't only about what needs to get done.

It's conversation.
It's curiosity.
It's connection.
It's learning someone's story.
And it's making sure people continue to feel part of the world around them.

🍕 HAPPY FRIDAY, VICTORIA! 🍕

And really… what says Friday better than pizza night? 😋

For our August Community Spotlight, we're shining some love on a local favourite: Cosmos Pizza & Pasta! 💙

August is all about activities, engagement, and connection - and sometimes connection looks as simple as sharing a really good meal!

Food has an incredible way of bringing people together.

Joy isn't just a nice feeling. Science says it's actually good medicine.

In a landmark study published in Psychosomatic Medicine, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people who regularly experience positive emotions (happiness, calm, and a sense of well-being). They were significantly less likely to get sick when exposed to a cold virus, and reported fewer symptoms when they did. The same research linked positive emotional style to lower cortisol levels and reduced inflammation, two key factors in healthy aging.

Put simply: Having a good time is good for you!

At Senior Helpers, our Companion Care service is built around exactly that idea. Our caregivers get to know each client's personality, interests, and favorite activities. They plan visits around the things that bring them joy.
