Dementia care is not about arguing with the brain. It is about learning to support the person behind the diagnosis with compassion, patience, and understanding.

Small changes inside the home can create a profound sense of safety and calm. Consistent routines, simple communication, familiar music, reduced clutter, good lighting, reassurance, and emotional connection all help reduce fear and overstimulation. Often, what appears to be “difficult behavior” is really communication from a changing brain trying to express discomfort, confusion, fatigue, pain, loneliness, or overwhelm.

One of the most important things a care partner can remember is this: emotions remain even when memory changes. People living with dementia may forget details, but they still feel tone, kindness, safety, warmth, and love.

And caregivers, please remember this too: you matter. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is part of good dementia care.

In my position as a personal support worker I get to help people with all kinds of different things that they need help with in their lives. Some days i get to go for walks, play cards, write out cards to family members to celebrate different occasions. Some days are helping them shower or doctors appointments. I truly love being able to help people in anyway they need in their day to day lives that makes their lives better.
