As promised, the moment you’ve been waiting for is here! This month, we’re sharing simple, practical tips that can save your washer from odours, mould, and unnecessary wear, all in just a few easy steps.
Tip of the Month Why washing machines start to smell — even when they look clean
Modern high-efficiency washers use very little water. What many people don’t realize is that using too much detergent can create buildup inside the machine, especially behind the rubber door seal and in between the inner and outer tub.
Over time, that residue traps moisture, leading to odour and mould growth.
To keep your washer fresh, start with the single easiest change that makes the biggest difference:
• Use only 1–2 tablespoons of HE detergent (most people use far more than needed). Using the right amount helps prevent buildup, odours, and extra strain on your washer. A trusted brand like Persil works well. It can be ordered online or found locally at stores like Canadian Appliance Parts or Illichman’s.
• Leave the washer door and detergent dispenser open between loads to allow airflow and prevent moisture buildup
• Wipe inside the rubber door gasket once a month
• Run the “Tub Clean” or “Self Clean” cycle (most washers have one) about once a month. If your washer doesn’t have a self-clean cycle, simply run an empty load on the longest and hottest setting.
• Clean out the filter at the bottom of the washer if your model has one. Doing this helps remove lint, hair, and debris that can contribute to odours
The self-clean cycle or empty hot cycle helps flush out detergent buildup inside the drum and internal components.
Some homeowners use white vinegar to help with odour. If used, it should only be added during an empty Tub Clean or Self Clean cycle.
For regular maintenance, we recommend using a washer cleaner designed for high-efficiency machines.
These small steps can prevent smells, reduce mould issues, and extend the life of your washer.
