Confidence isn't something you can hand someone in an info session. It gets built, hands-on, over time.

We spent time with Island Ignite, a camp giving young women real exposure to firefighting years before they'd ever apply.

Three days of actual gear and actual scenarios.

What we heard from participants, alumni, and instructors points to something every department can use.

Early exposure does something a recruitment pamphlet can't.

It lets someone test the job before she's decided against it.

That decision gets made earlier than departments might assume, often years before an application exists.

Widen the door early, and more people walk through it later.

The fire code doesn't ask who was on shift. It asks one question: Who's named as the owner or authorized agent in the fire safety plan?

Most fire codes across Canada use that exact language.

The authorized agent keeps the fire safety plan current. They keep inspection and testing records up to date, for alarms, sprinklers, and extinguishers. They make sure staff can explain what they'd do if the alarm went off right now.

For a housing society or a property management company, that's usually the building manager.

Or a staff member named specifically for the role. Rarely the board. Rarely whoever's in the office that day.

Check your fire safety plan. Who's named as the authorized agent? If you don't know, that's the first thing to fix.

Fire investigation tip: know your collapse zones.

During a fire investigation, it’s essential to identify potential collapse zones, especially in structures with compromised walls.

Best practice: The collapse zone should extend 1.5 times the height of the wall that may fail. If a wall is 20 feet tall, that means staying at least 30 feet back.

These precautions protect investigators, evidence integrity, and scene control.

The difference shows up in confidence, not credentials.

People exposed to fire-related tasks earlier carry a different level of belief in their own abilities.

What does two days of real case work actually change for an investigator?

We just wrapped NFPA 1033 fire investigation training in Vulcan, Alberta!

A group of investigators spent two days working through real scenarios together, pushing each other to think harder about what the evidence actually shows.

Thank you to everyone who made the trip and put in the work, and congratulations to everyone who finished the course!

Early leadership opportunities let female firefighters test out instructing and command roles long before they'd typically get the chance, and find out early whether leadership is the right fit.

Inspectors are seeing more of these calls: e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools, phones, all charging on beds, couches, stairwells.

This year's message is simple. Use the charger made for the device. Charge on a hard surface, away from exits.

Never overnight in a spot you can't see!
