June holds space for both National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month.

This month invites us to honour the histories, teachings, and leadership of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, while also recognizing the strength, brilliance, and ongoing contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, including Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer people.

Indigenous history informs the work we do today. It lives in the systems communities continue to navigate, in the stories people carry, and in the ongoing work of truth, healing, and self-determination. Pride, too, asks us to reflect on belonging, safety, and the right for people to live fully and freely as themselves.

For those looking to deepen their understanding this month, here are a few resources we recommend:

Over the years, Kylee has helped shape RCI in lasting ways through her leadership, dedication, and deep commitment to the work. As Partner and Lead for Operations and Sustainability, she has been part of building the strong foundation that supports our team, our relationships, and the way we continue to grow.

There is so much intention behind what Kylee has helped make possible. We’re incredibly grateful for all she has contributed over the past 18 years and for the leadership she continues to bring to RCI.

Happy anniversary Kylee!

Our Team Leads Sofia and Kylee recently travelled to Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, where they were warmly welcomed into community as part of RCI’s ongoing evaluation work.

During their visit, they spent time at KVIBE, the Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange, a youth-centred program of Kōkua Kalihi Valley. KVIBE is a place where young people can build and repair bikes, learn alongside mentors, grow their confidence, and stay connected to culture and community.

At KVIBE, Sofia and Kylee saw how a bicycle can become part of a much bigger story about care, responsibility, belonging, and connection. They also had the opportunity to learn about KKV’s broader community work, including traditional healing, medicine, food-growing, and canoe-building.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed our team and for offering their time, knowledge, and stories. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from the work being carried forward in Kalihi Valley.

This month, we are celebrating Émilie’s 5-year anniversary with RCI!

For five years, Émilie has brought so much heart to the work we do alongside communities and partners. She has a thoughtful way of holding the details, keeping projects moving with care, and making sure the work reflects the relationships and responsibilities behind it.

Émilie, we are so grateful for everything you have contributed to RCI over the past five years. Thank you for the care, dedication, and heart you bring to the team.

Congratulations on this wonderful milestone!

For our May Book of the Month, we’re reading Unbroken: My Fight for Survival, Hope, and Justice for Indigenous Women and Girls by Angela Sterritt.

We chose this book in recognition of Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people.

Part memoir and part investigative journalism, Unbroken brings attention to colonial violence, systemic racism, and the ways Indigenous women and girls are too often ignored, dismissed, and devalued.

This is a powerful and necessary read. Sterritt asks us to witness these stories with care, to listen closely, and to sit with difficult truths. She also honours the resistance, strength, and love carried by Indigenous women, families, and communities.

This May, we read with remembrance and responsibility. We honour those who are missing and taken, the families and communities still seeking justice, and the advocates who continue to call for change.

Today is Red Dress Day.

We honour and remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people, and we hold their families, loved ones, and communities in our hearts.

The red dress reminds us of those who should still be here. It carries grief, love, remembrance, and the ongoing call for justice.

Today and every day, may we listen, remember, and stand alongside the families, survivors, advocates, and communities who continue to lead this work.

Today is World Health Day.

Health is more than a system or service. It is shaped by safety, connection, culture, community, and the conditions people live in every day.

At RCI, we believe wellbeing must be understood in wholistic and equitable ways. When we honour lived experience and community voice, we create stronger paths toward healing and long-term wellness.

It's RCI Book of the Month Time!

April’s RCI Book of the Month brings us back to a series that started at the very beginning of this journey. Our very first book pick was To Shape a Dragon’s Breath, and this month we’re excited to continue with the series second book, To Ride a Rising Storm by Moniquill Blackgoose.

There’s something special about returning to a story world that stays with you. This next chapter carries forward the depth, tension, and imagination of the first book, while continuing to open space for reflection on power, resistance, and what it means to find your place in a changing world.

At RCI, we’re always drawn to stories that spark conversation, stretch our thinking, and remind us of the strength of Indigenous storytelling. This one feels like a fitting return.
