This is cool🧊

Did You Know:

❄️Scientists can analyze ice for data about Earth's climate in the far distant past.

❄️The ratio of Oxygen-18 to Oxygen-16 isotopes found in air bubbles in ice cores indicates the temperature at which the snow fell, before it became glacier ice.

❄️Ice cores can also be analyzed for evidence of volcanic activity, dust storms, wind patterns,
atmospheric data, and carbon dioxide concentrations.

❄️Ice cores are stored at gelogic labs where they are kept frozen for research purposes. Literally an ice library. The nearest one to me is in Lakewood, Colorado, and I visited it in 2009.🧊🌎

🔬🌎There is so much we don’t know we didn’t know about the Earth.

🦠It’s astounding how huge an impact teeny-tiny bacteria and algae have had since the planet first formed.

🫧We have an atmosphere with Oxygen thanks to algae, since ~2.3 Billion years ago.

🌿🧬All life on Earth began with bacteria ~2.4 Billion years ago.

👥Now it’s been observed that algae & bacteria team up to absorb Nitrogen.
🌾This could transform the way plants/crops obtain fertilizer necessary for their growth.

👨‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬The intrinsic workings of the Earth are more complex than we could ever imagine & scientists are continually gaining deeper understanding of these organisms.

🪨💧Water (tentatively) discovered on Mars! Amazing!

But.

The water is contained in fractures of VERY deep mid-crust rocks, at 11-20km deep.

To compare, that’s 8-17km deeper than the deepest well ever drilled in Saskatchewan (DEEP Earth geothermal well near Estevan is ~3.5km deep).

The discovery was made using archived seismic imaging data.

What a treat today was!

I had a wonderful opportunity to talk rocks, fossils, dinosaurs, and volcanoes with many bright curious kids.

I was asked some very insightful questions like “Do different types of lava make different types of rocks?”, “How do you identify a meteorite rock?”, and “How do rocks tell stories if rocks can’t talk?” 😂
