The longer you can take to pay people, the better cash flow you will have.

Working capital in a business is all about balancing the scales in your favour. Often, small businesses are supplied by much larger businesses that can afford to provide you with better payment terms.

Take advantage of that generosity. Ask for 30-60 day payment terms on accounts. This will help you keep more of your cash in your business to pay yourself or invest in new projects.

Keep more money in your pocket by lowering your reliance on accepting credit cards. Taking credit cards is very handy for high-volume and high-speed businesses (like retail and grocery) but can hurt relationship-based businesses (trades and personal services) with higher product costs.

Offer clients a variety of options like cash, cheque and e-transfer before requesting credit cards. Give clients slight discounts if they pay early and via your preferred payment method. Finally, only take credit cards when you have to. They are great options when used as a deposit and a client is late on a payment.
