More ad spend doesn’t automatically mean more students.

You can spend thousands generating leads, but if the rest of your business isn’t working, throwing more money at advertising won’t solve the problem.

Your offer, sales process, student experience and retention all have to work together.

Taking care of your staff and protecting the health of your business shouldn’t be competing goals.

Your coaches deserve to be paid fairly. But as the owner, you’re also the person who took the risk, invested the time and built the business that makes those jobs possible.

The answer isn’t simply cutting payroll.

It’s building a better system around your team.

Can your staff contribute beyond coaching? Could the right people help with onboarding, sales, retention, programming or curriculum?

The goal is to create roles that provide more value to the school while creating better opportunities for your team.

Build a system that works for your staff AND the business.

How much of your martial arts school’s revenue is going toward payroll?

It’s a number every school owner should know.

The data shows average payroll at approximately 34% of revenue, while around 40% of schools are spending 40% or more.

And the profitability numbers are worth paying attention to.

Schools operating with lower payroll percentages were far more likely to produce significant profit.

That doesn’t mean “pay your staff less.” It means understanding what your payroll is actually costing the business and making sure staffing expenses are sustainable relative to revenue.

Know your numbers. Then make decisions based on them.
