Woke up in Ottawa. Ending the day in Pelly Crossing, on Selkirk Territory.

One day, one country, end to end. I never want to get used to that.

This photo is from the National Indigenous History Month celebration on the Hill. Standing with my Northern Energy Innovation colleagues, Minister Rebecca Alty, and Indigenous leaders from across the country.

This week ran from Vancouver to Fredericton to Ottawa and home to the North. The miles aren't the point. The people are. I get to see this country alongside clients and partners building something real for their Nations, and that's the privilege of my life.

In the Yukon now with new clients. Grateful.

From the Pacific to the Arctic and back. 20 days. 3 countries. One wild start to the year. 🌎✈️

My schedule has been non-stop, but the mission remains consistent: driving Indigenous participation and sustainable energy solutions.

📍 Vancouver (AME Roundup): Representing Mokwateh—shout-out to Max and JP! Seeing Indigenous Nations guide the industry on FPIC was critical. The energy of the drum dancing was a powerful reminder of why we do this work.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Recharge: Quick stop to see the family (missing my little man Ni’inlii!) before crossing the ocean.

🇳🇴 Tromsø, Norway: Deep diving into Arctic security and energy resilience with Michael and Rob from Northern Energy Innovation (NEI).

🇮🇸 Iceland: Stole a birthday weekend to explore the history, food, and landscapes with my partner. 🌋

🇨🇦 Ottawa & Toronto: Currently in Ottawa for a whirlwind 32 hours supporting NEI, then heading to Toronto for Arctic 360.

At Arctic Frontiers this week with Northern Energy Innovation, and Arctic security is front and centre. You can feel the shift: more geopolitical pressure, more “strategic” talk about the North.

My worry is simple: when decisions speed up, Northern people get pushed out. The Arctic becomes a chessboard and Indigenous nations get treated like “stakeholders.”

Real security in the Arctic has always been relationships, trust, and cooperation, and it has to include self-determination, strong Indigenous governance, and community resilience. Even energy belongs in that conversation: if a community controls its energy future, it’s less vulnerable and more secure on its own terms.

Grateful to be in community this week at the Renewables in Remote Communities Conference here in Whitehorse.

Today I had the opportunity to be part of two important conversations:

Energy Governance in the North:
This session focused on the shifting landscape of energy generation and transmission in remote communities—and more importantly, on the roles Indigenous governments and development corporations are playing as owners, partners, and decision-makers. There’s a real opportunity here to reshape how we meet our energy needs in a way that puts Indigenous rights, values, and economic self-determination at the centre.

Negotiating a Just Transition – A Fireside Chat with Elder Mark Wedge:
This one was close to the heart. Elder Mark and I sat down for a candid conversation about what it takes to ensure Indigenous communities are not just included—but leading—in Canada’s clean energy transition. We explored how traditional governance systems, Indigenous knowledge& values systems, and contemporary negotiation strategies can come together to support long-term leadership in this space.

We also shared more about the Indigenous Negotiation Fellowship, a program designed to equip Indigenous leaders with the tools and frameworks needed to show up strong at the negotiation table—on our terms.

Appreciate everyone who showed up with openness and questions. Let’s keep the dialogue going.

Today is a momentous day as we celebrate the incredible achievement of my daughter, Sienna, who is graduating from high school! Watching her walk across that stage in Inuvik, NT, in the heart of the Beaufort Delta, fills me with immense pride and joy. It's a testament to her hard work, determination, and the bright future that lies ahead.

Becoming a father at 19 was a journey filled with challenges and growth, but seeing Sienna reach this milestone makes every moment worthwhile. She's not just a graduate today; she's a young woman who has overcome obstacles and embraced opportunities with grace and strength. Her dedication and perseverance inspire me daily, and I know she will continue to achieve great things.

As we celebrate this special day, I am reminded of the incredible support from our family, friends, and community. Sienna's success is not just hers alone; it is a shared victory with everyone who has been part of her journey. Thank you for your unwavering love and encouragement.

Affinity North is honoured to be invited again by Law Professors David Wright, Robert Hamilton and Josh Nichols who are hosting a two-week intensive program in the Yukon on Modern Treaties and the Law with law students from the University of Calgary.

The students will learn directly from Yukon First Nation leaders and spend time in the community and the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation, Ta'an Kwäch’än Council, Carcross Tagish First Nation and the Kluane First Nation.

The conference is filled with amazing Indigenous entrepreneurs, First Nation Governments, Indigenous Development Corporation excellence.
