A Yukon Wildland Fire Management crew spent most of the day on this fire yesterday. They extinguished the perimeter of the fire, and expect the weather to do the rest but there may be some smoke visible until winter gets here. As always please burn safely and make doubly sure your fire is completely out when you're done.

Despite lower temperatures and shorter days in the fall, windy conditions and dry fuels can create wildfire risk. This week, Wildland Fire Management responded to a 0.1-hectare wildfire caused by an abandoned campfire on an island in Marsh Lake. We thank the members of the public who reported the fire.

Legal fire season ended on September 30, and seasonal wildfire crews have completed their terms. However, Wildland Fire Management can still respond to small-scale incidents like this one.

Permission to burn outside of Whitehorse, Dawson or Watson Lake city limits is not needed until April 1. However, you are accountable year-round for the fires you build. If you build a fire or burn brush during dry and windy conditions, be responsible:

🔥 Only make a fire that is big enough for your needs. Take into account local winds and the condition of the forest around you.
🪾 If you are burning brush, keep your piles small enough that you can manage them.
🪣 Have the tools, and if possible a water source, available to put out your fire at a moment’s notice.
👀 Never leave a fire unattended. Before you leave or go to sleep, soak your campfire, stir and repeat until the ashes are cold to the touch.

Within the space of a week our landscape's shifted - from being under 2 feet of snow to today's exposed wildfire fuel.
We're all out of those FireSmart glasses but please have a look around your building perimeters for debris and potentially ignitable materials. Happy Spring!

Residents may notice fire crews and equipment in Porter Creek, Copper Ridge, and Riverdale on Monday, April 27 from about 9 am until 5 pm.

Training exercises will be underway and are designed to simulate real-world situations for firefighters. The public is asked to give crews space to train safely.

The Whitehorse Fire Department is partnering with the Yukon Fire Marshal’s Office, volunteer fire departments, Yukon Wildland Fire Management, and other municipalities to enhance wildfire response capacity.

The focus of the training is on managing complex situations, specifically wildfires impacting communities to help crews be better prepared to respond.

This training also aligns with the wildfire response system in British Columbia, and could help improve how departments work together during mutual aid deployments.

The Whitehorse Fire Department is committed to protecting the city through collaboration, continued training, and preparedness.
