This has been a rough week for us living with wildlife.

A coyote has been picking off our free range chickens.
As if that isn't bad enough, a bear has completely destroyed one of our bee hives and severely damaged another. It made an unsuccessful attempt into a third hive, doing only minor damage, and pulled apart an empty nuc box we had nearby as a swarm trap. One hive remained unscathed.

Overall, we are very lucky. We know the risks of letting our chickens free range, and the quality of life they have from eating bugs and being in the sun and grass is worth that risk for us. But now we need to intervene to protect them until this coyote moves on.
As for the bear, we are strongly hoping it does not decide to come back.

This is sometimes the way it goes, we share the same habitat as these wild animals and do our best to manage the interactions.
