The principal owners are the Wikwemikong Development Commission (WDC), and the operations

of the company are overseen by the Board of Directors of WDC. The primary business objective

is to provide a branded alternative telecommunications service, driven by local and long distance

telephone service to all residents of the Wikwemikong Reserve, Manitoulin Island, and other First

Nation Commun

ities in Ontario. Our brand is FirstTel, and our service has amalgamated with WikyTV5

in providing broadcasting services through a service delivery agreement. FirstTel will work closely with

Wikwemikong Development Commission to assist in WDC’s mission to advance the interests of the band

members in economic development, self-reliance and quality of life and to strive to provide maximum

satisfaction to all its customers, suppliers and business associates. FirstTel will use an existing network of partnerships to facilitate the distribution of its services to include

communications and broadcasting that will allow FirstTel to provide a seamless integrated service

throughout the island. Since its incorporation in 2003, FirstTel has become the leading edge in cost-effective

telecommunications and is developing the broadband telecommunications and will facilitate growth

and improve the competitiveness of both existing services. Our Mission is to enhance the pursuit of self-
reliance, self-governance, and self-determination of the Wikwemikong Reserve and other First Nation

Communities through the successful implementation of a branded alternative telecommunications

services that increases the opportunities for wealth, opportunity and quality of Life. FirstTel is your First

link in communications. FirstTel partnered and secured marketing dollars with Waubetek for increased visibility and branding of

FirstTel is pleased to report that two of our three communication towers are now operational. Unfortunately, the FirstTel Tower is still undergoing repairs after sustaining damage from the storms. We have scheduled the necessary repairs for Thursday, March 26th and anticipate resolving all issues by the end of the day. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to restore full service.

Furthermore, we are excited to announce the upcoming launch of ManitouLink, our new fibre-optic internet service, which will offer ultra-fast speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps and surpass the reliability of current services in the region.

Update on Internet Outage.
March 24th, 2026
Last week's weather event was an abnormal circumstance that has affected our services since last Tuesday. We have gone through many troubleshooting scenarios since the outage. Yesterday we had riggers clear ice off the Cape Smith tower radios to see if we can create a better signal for restoration. We were unsuccessful. We currently have riggers on the Water Tower and they discovered heavy build up of ice on the radios there. We are clearing the ice and will assess the situation. We will provide another update later this afternoon if needed. Chi Miigwetch for your continued patience, we promise you we are working hard to get services restored as soon as possible.

Ongoing Connectivity Issues Update for FirstTel Customers:

This week's severe weather conditions have led to outages in certain community areas, currently affecting about 40 customers. Ice buildup on our Cape Smith Tower has disrupted wireless connection radios. Despite the hardware still being functional, we are reliant on ice melt to restore connectivity. Technical support has been dispatched to assess and clear ice from the towers. We appreciate your patience during this rectification process and anticipate having services resumed within 48 to 72 hours. We are working diligently to restore all services and regret any inconvenience caused. Chi Miigwetch for your continued support.
