Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. Take a few minutes today to check the alarms in your home.
Make sure to:
✅ Test every alarm to confirm it is working
✅ Check the expiry date
✅ Replace batteries where required
✅ Replace any alarm that has reached the end of its service life
🏠 Every home should have working smoke alarms on every level and outside all sleeping areas.
Carbon monoxide alarms should also be installed on every level of your home.
A few minutes today can make a significant difference in an emergency.

West Hants Regional Municipality Office Closure

In respect of Truth and Reconciliation Day, our municipal offices will be closed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026

The Truth and Reconciliation flag flies at the Windsor Waterfront. (roundabout at the King Street extension). The West Hants Sports Complex will be illuminated in orange.

Waste Collection WILL take place.

The West Hants Sports Complex will be open 9 am - 10 pm. The Community Centre is open 8 am - Noon, and the Visitor Welcome Centre is open 9 am - 5 pm.

In West Hants, we join communities across Canada in observing September 30 as the sixth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day—a day to honour Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impacts on their families and communities. It is also a time to deepen our understanding of the histories and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

The 2026 Orange Shirt Day design carries the message of “Happiness”—a reminder that every child deserves a childhood filled with happiness, safety, belonging, and hope. The message is rooted in the continuing commitment to honour Survivors and build a future where Every Child Matters.

Here in Nova Scotia, the legacy of the residential school system is close to home. The Shubenacadie Indian Residential School, which operated from 1930 to 1967, was the only residential school in the Maritimes. Children from Mi’kmaq and other Indigenous communities throughout the region were forced to attend.

Orange Shirt Day grew from the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her when she entered a residential school as a six-year-old child. Today, wearing orange is a visible way to honour Survivors, remember the children who never came home, and recognize the ongoing journey of truth and reconciliation.

On September 30, we encourage everyone in West Hants to wear orange, take time to learn and reflect, listen to Indigenous voices, and remember the children.

Extreme Heat Safety Reminder

Environment Canada is forecasting extreme heat conditions. Everyone is encouraged to take precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related illness:
• Drink water frequently
• Seek air-conditioned or shaded spaces
• Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing
• Use sunscreen and take breaks when outdoors
• Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
• Check on older adults and vulnerable neighbours
• Ensure pets have access to water and cool shelter
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle

🚤 Boaters – Safety Zone
All boaters are asked to move upstream of the Falmouth Bridge (toward Windsor) before dusk. A large safety zone is required around the fireworks barge, and all boats must be clear of Lake Pesaquid before the show begins. The Windsor Fire Department will be monitoring the area to ensure everyone's safety.

🌳 Falmouth Park
From 4:00 p.m. until dusk, access to Falmouth Park will be limited while the fireworks are loaded onto the barge at the boat launch. The barge will then be towed to the centre of Lake Pesaquid, where the fireworks will be launched at dusk.

🚫 Road Safety
For your safety and the safety of others, please do not stop vehicles on the Windsor Causeway, Highway 101; the Falmouth Bridge; or any roadway to watch the fireworks. Please enjoy the show from a safe viewing area.
