It was a pleasure to welcome Pierre Poilievre to Cavalier Tool & Manufacturing Ltd. for a visit focused on Canadian manufacturing and the mold-making industry.

A big part of what makes Cavalier what it is today is our people. During the tour, we had the opportunity to showcase the skilled professionals behind the work — the machinists, designers, engineers, apprentices, and support teams whose knowledge, experience, and dedication bring complex projects to life.

The visit also highlighted the opportunities available in manufacturing and the importance of building careers where skilled workers can continue to learn, grow, and make an impact.

We were also pleased to be joined by Windsor-Essex MPs Kathy Borrelli for Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore, Harb Gill MP, and Dave Epp, and to have the opportunity to showcase the talent and expertise within our industry.

⛳️ A great day on the green!

We had an incredible time at the Cavalier Tool Annual Golf Tournament at Wildwood Golf Course! It was a great day of friendly competition and spending time with our team.

We’d like to recognize our Social Club for all the time and effort that went into making the tournament happen, as well as our vendors and partners who contributed prizes and supported the event. We truly appreciate your continued partnership.

🍻 The Cavalier Tool Social Club was at it again!

This time, we ventured out to one of Wallaceburg's hidden gems — Glasstown Brewing Company.

The afternoon started with drinks on the river at their beautiful outdoor patio before we were treated to an unforgettable experience in their brand-new second-floor speakeasy.

Between the incredible food, great drinks, live entertainment, flight tastings, and behind-the-scenes brewery tours, it was a day to remember. A huge thank you to the entire Glasstown Brewery team for going above and beyond to make our visit so special. Your hospitality and passion shone through in every detail.

And of course, a special shout-out to Ryan Bradley, whose soulful vocals put the perfect exclamation point on an already fantastic day.

Great people, great atmosphere, and great memories. Thanks to everyone who joined us—we're already looking forward to the next Social Club adventure!

No mold operates in ideal conditions.

It operates under force.

Heat.
Friction.
Pressure.
Material behavior.
And time.

Over time, everything wears.

That is why Mechanical is one of the three fundamental pillars of mold design.

Mechanical tells us whether the mold can still repeat the cycle after launch, after production begins, and after thousands or millions of cycles.

Without mechanical stability, Flow and Thermal do not matter.

A tool may fill properly.

It may cool effectively.

But if it cannot open, close, align, eject, shut off, and repeat reliably, the process will not hold.

In large, complex tooling, mechanical complexity often increases. Slides, lifters, shutoffs, large components, automation interaction, and complex ejection all have to work together.

At Cavalier Tool, Mechanical design is reviewed through Design for Manufacturability, draft analysis, block studies, rib studies, tooling action studies, shutoff angle review, ejection clearance, and full design simulation.

The goal is to prove the mold will function as intended before it is built.

The Thinking Behind Thermal Design at Cavalier

How do you maintain both performance and appearance on a large cosmetic part?

Control the heat.

In commercial goods tooling, Thermal design is about managing how heat moves through the part, into the steel, and out through the cooling system.

On a large cosmetic part, the cooling strategy has to support more than speed. It has to support stability, repeatability, and appearance.

At Cavalier Tool, this starts with understanding the material and reviewing how heat will transfer from the molded part back through the tool. From there, cooling circuits are evaluated and adjusted to optimize performance.

That means looking at water line layout, distance from the surface, line length, flow rate, baffles, supply and return strategy, Reynolds Number, and the customer’s available water capacity.

Each area of the tool has to be addressed individually.

Sometimes the issue is not whether cooling exists. It is whether that cooling is actually doing what the part needs.

If a line has too many restrictions, it may not remove heat effectively. If a surface area runs too hot, it can affect the cosmetic finish. Even cooling on a non-cosmetic side of the part can influence the outcome on the visible surface.

The goal is not just to cool the part quickly.

The goal is to cool it consistently, strategically, and in a way that protects both production performance and the customer’s final appearance requirements.

Because Thermal design does not just influence cycle time.

It influences what the customer sees.

There’s nothing quite like a summer day spent with The Cavalier Army.

Recently, our team and their families came together for the annual Cavalier Social Club Picnic, enjoying an afternoon filled with great food, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs.

From a friendly co****le tournament to some relaxing fishing and a delicious BBQ, the day was all about taking a break, connecting outside of work, and celebrating the people who make Cavalier such a special place.

Thermal is where molds begin to fail quietly.

Thermal problems do not always stop production immediately.

Instead, they drift.

Cycle time starts to increase.
Dimensions begin to move.
Warpage develops.
Gloss variation appears.
Consistency starts to fade.

The mold may still be running, but it may no longer be stable.

That is why Thermal is such a critical consideration in mold design.

Thermal tells us how heat is introduced, transferred, and removed from the mold. It helps determine whether the process will stabilize or slowly drift out of control.

In large, complex, cosmetic tooling, Thermal shows up in the part’s appearance and fit.

Sink.
Warpage.
Dimensional movement.
Surface variation.

These are often thermal problems, not just processing problems.

At Cavalier Tool, Thermal design is evaluated through cooling circuit layout, mold temperature review, thermal simulation, flow rate, Reynolds Number, water line length, distance from surface, baffles, supply and return strategy, and the customer’s available water capacity.

The Fundamentals of Flow at Cavalier Tool

How do you manage what the customer ultimately sees on a large cosmetic part?

It starts with Flow.

In tooling for commercial goods, Flow is not hidden inside the mold.

Flow often becomes visible on the final part.

A weld line across a cosmetic surface.
A flow mark in the wrong location.
A hesitation point that affects appearance.
A gas trap that creates a quality issue.
A pressure demand that limits the process window.

These outcomes are not random.

They are influenced by how the plastic moves through the tool.

That is why, on large parts, Flow has to be engineered before steel is cut.

At Cavalier Tool, this starts with gating strategy and Moldflow analysis.
We evaluate fill time, cavity pressure, injection velocity, runner balance, venting, gate performance, and pressure requirements.

Gate locations, valve gate timing, number of drops, and fill-front strategy all have to be reviewed together.

In some cases, gates may be opened or closed in sequence to create a controlled flow front across the part, helping manage weld locations, knit lines, and potential gas traps.

The goal is not simply to fill the cavity.

The goal is to control the path of the plastic so the final part meets customer expectations.

Because on a large part, Flow is more than a design consideration.

It is what the customer sees.
