It's an actionable framework for doing the right thing — learning the truth about residential schools, honouring the survivors, and restoring the spirit of cooperation intended in the treaties between settler Canada and the original peoples.

What are you and your business doing to move reconciliation forward? Have you read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 92nd of 94 calls to action that focuses on business? Are you supporting Indigenous suppliers, collaborating with Indigenous-owned companies, or providing employment and mentoring opportunities to Indigenous youth?

The way forward is as easy as it is essential. Listen to Indigenous voices in the community, learn about their determination to overcome barriers, and lead your industry into the future by helping reconcile our shared past.

When the sun comes up tomorrow, Casera Credit Union will have merged with Access Credit Union, and my 22-year-long association with Casera will end. Thank you to Brent Thomas, Casera's CEO, for valuing my creative services over the years. Our working relationship was incredible, and we certainly accomplished a lot in marketing, communications, and community relations. It's the end of one era and the beginning of another.

Good news for creators. The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) created a free-to-use Indigenous stock photo library. The images are the work of Indigenous photographer Shelby Lisk. As CIRA explains, they honour Indigenous entrepreneurship and address the Indigenous representation gap in most online stock images. Check them out.

Brent Thomas is retiring as CEO of Casera Credit Union. He's been at the helm of Casera since 1999, and for 22 of those 24 years, I've provided marketing and communication services to him and the credit union. To honour my long-time client, I teamed up with Leona and Hellmut Regeher of Spindrift Design Studio (who joined Casera's marketing team in 2008) to present Brent with a framed poster of the 24 historical annual reports that tell the story of his successful tenure at Casera.

Justin Bova, this year's CIBPA Entrepreneur of the Year Award recipient, will receive his award tonight at the 35th Annual Sons and Daughters of Italy Gala at the RBC Convention Centre.

All creatives have an origin story. Here's mine.

In 1988, I pondered a freelance writing career, fretting whether leaving a well-paying but dead-end job for an unsure future was ingenious or ill-advised.

I volunteered to pen a few articles for a writer's newsletter and ended up interviewing Carol Shields, the late Canadian literary icon, in her office at the University of Winnipeg. We spent a quiet hour talking about the challenges of being a writer.

I told her about my dilemma. To Carol, moving forward was the only choice. "Why are you still working at a job you don't like?" she asked. The clear resolve in her question had an impact. A few months later, I quit my job and transitioned into writing as a livelihood.

Looking back, I can measure the rewards of my risk, but, at the time, I was only focused on the unpredictability of my decision. Uncertainty can be a bully with a sharp stick. It takes courage to move forward in the face of self-doubt.

Thirty-five years later, I'm still taking risks, albeit mitigated ones. Every business decision can be unpredictable. Still, experience allows you to measure risk and reward on a scale that places as much emphasis on personal well-being as pure profit.

I'm grateful that I integrated Carol Shield's wise counsel into my decision-making all those years ago. Moving forward was — and always is — the right thing to do.
