Bonsai is actually a sculptor collaborating with a plant. This schefflera was started from a cutting 28 years ago. It is done in a traditional style that means “embracing the stone”. A year ago, I thought it was on its last legs, so I decided to let it enjoy its final summer outside on the deck. Turns out, that was exactly what the doctor ordered. By summer’s end, it was looking better than ever. A leaf and root-pruning in the fall reduced it back to its basic form and allowed it to come back indoors to pretend it was spring. The bounce-back was glorious. Not all indoor bonsais need time outside, but it seems that some sure do appreciate it. I think this one will get a summer holiday on the deck from now on.
